In a 1936 text dedicated to Józef Wittlin’s novel Jerzy Stempowski tries to position it within the context of the contemporary political, social and cultural events. He also analyses the artistic values of the novel in relation to the changes of the world-view caused by the traumatic events of the First World War.

This article deals with genesis of an exceptional motion picture in the context of the United States in the early fifties. The Salt of the Earth was created by cooperation of the Hollywood Reds and miners from Local 890. American Anti‑communists labelled the movie that tells a story of one rare strike as a pure soviet propaganda and therefore they tried to do everything possible to sabotage it on local as well as federal level. Despite serious complications during whole production process the movie had premiere in New York in March 1954.

Článek se věnuje vzniku na poměry panující v první polovině padesátých let ve Spojených státech zcela mimořádnému filmu Salt of the Earth. Na jeho vzniku se podíleli jak tzv. hollywoodští „rudí“, tak horníci z pobočky číslo 890 z Grant County. Snímek popisující příběh jedné neobvyklé stávky byl označen americkými antikomunisty za čirou sovětskou propagandu, a proto se snažili produkci všemi možnými prostředky překazit. Aféra získala především lokální ale částečně i celostátní ráz. Přes skutečně značné peripetie se ovšem podařilo nakonec celý projekt dovést až k newyorské premiéře v březnu 1954.

In the present article, I analyze four versions of the poem Przedśpiew [Prelude], which opens Józef Wittlin’s collection of poems entitled Hymny [Hymns], and discuss significant changes within the respective editions, pointing to the research potential of such an analysis. I also postulate that Hymny should be edited and published in accordance with the rules of genetic criticism of printed texts. I also demonstrate how genetic criticism may be applied to the works of Józef Wittlin in my discussion of a fragment of the manuscript of the novel Salt of the Earth. Thus, I both introduce and outline the future critical perspectives of genetic criticism.

Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza czterech odsłon utworu Przedśpiew, tekstu otwierającego tom poezji Józefa Wittlina zatytułowany Hymny. Na przykładzie tego tekstu autor wskazuje na znaczące zmiany w obrębie poszczególnych wydań poezji, a dzięki temu na potencjał badawczy, jaki oferuje ich opis. Jest to zarazem postulat opracowania wydania Hymnów zgodnie z regułami genetyki druków. Możliwości zastosowania krytyki genetycznej w stosunku do Józefa Wittlina pokazuje również symptomatyczny przykład fragmentu rękopisu powieści Sól ziemi. Kwestie te stanowią zapowiedź dalszych badań krytycznogenetycznych i wstęp do nich.
