The aim of this article is to present Vladislav Nehring (1830–1909), eminent Polish Slavist, the professor of the Slavonic Philology Department of Wroclaw University and his academic works on Polish and Slavonic philology. The analysis of his papers proves that Russian folklore, literature and language were the scope of his research. His works contributed significantly to the academic discourse of that time. The crowning achievement of Vladislav Nehring’s input into Russian philology was his being appointed associate member of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1882. His achievements made him a widely known and respected philologist and Slavist in Russia. The article shows the interest in Vladislav Nehring in Russian (also Soviet) academic and reference works.

This article is an attempt at reflecting on the history of a legendary Sankt-Petersburg - a symbol of Russia’s power and potential. Built by Peter I, the new capital - antithesis to an old and wooden Moscow - identified with antichristian Europeanization became an object of deliberations for a traveller and a writer, European marquis de Custine, author of letters from his journey throughout Nicholas I’s Russia, collected as Russia in 1839,and an open-minded representative of Russian Europeans, a thinker Alexander Hercen, who happened to live in that “empire of facades”. The similarity of many of their observations and assessments, especially with regard to Petersburg of Nicholas I’s period, seems surprising.

Idzi Radziszewski’s activity in St. Petersburg during his fouryear term as rector of the Spiritual Academy was multilateral. The Rector became involved in pastoral activities, conducting retreats and preachingin St. Petersburg parishes. He was also active in charitable and aid organizations. The main sphere of activity was the education of the clergy and lay youth. Radziszewski, shortly after his arrival in the Russian capital, developed a project to reform the Spiritual Academy, emphasizing the improvement of the level of studies and specializations. In the situation of constant ministerial supervision, the reform was limited in scope, hence not all projects were implemented by the Rector. The establishment of the Higher Polish Courses gave the rector a new impulse to create a university whose graduates will build an independent state on Christian foundations. Recognizing the need for the formation of both priests and laity, Fr. Radziszewski was also involved in the work of the Social Council at the Ordinariate of the Mogilev Archdiocese. The preserved documentation of this activity allows us to outline the unchanging attitude of Fr. Radziszewski – action towards the common good.

Działalność ks. Idziego Radziszewskiego w Petersburgu w ciągu jego czteroletniej kadencji na stanowisku rektora Akademii Duchownej była wielostronna. Ks. Rektor zaangażował się w działalność duszpasterską, prowadząc rekolekcje i głosząc kazania w petersburskich parafiach. Działał także w organizacjach o charakterze charytatywnymi pomocowym. Główną zaś sferą aktywności było kształcenie duchowieństwa i młodzieży świeckiej. Ks. Powołanie do życia WyższychKursów Polskich dało zaś Rektorowi nowy impuls do tworzenia uczelni, której absolwenci będą budować niezawisłe państwo na chrześcijańskich podwalinach.
