Bells perform a very important function in the liturgical life of the Church and the urban community. They are used during great church ceremonies and funerals. In the past, they were supposed to mystically ward off misery, e.g. storms, and help measure time. Parish church of st. Nicholas, the current cathedral of the Elbląg diocese, as the largest and richest Elbląg’s temple has a rich history of bells. The first instruments of this kind existed there inthe middle of XIV century. All were destroyed by fire on April 26th, 1777. A small spirelet from the end of the 18th century did not responsive to the needs and rank of the church. When the new 97-meter tower was built in 1907, the famous company Schilling from Apolda hung 6 bells, which were confiscated in 1917. New ones, with a total weight of 10 tons, appeared in 1928. These bells were also taken by war. The current 3 steel bells come from the dismantled church of St. Anne.

Dzwony pełnią bardzo ważną funkcję w życiu liturgicznym Kościoła i społeczności miejskiej. Używane są podczas wielkich uroczystości kościelnych oraz podczas pogrzebów. Dawniej miały za zadanie w mistyczny sposób odganiać nieszczęścia, np. burze, bądź po prostu pomagać w odmierzaniu czasu. Kościół farny św. Mikołaja, obecna katedra diecezji elbląskiej, jako największa i najbogatsza elbląska świątynia posiada bogatą historię dzwonów. Pierwsze instrumenty tego rodzaju istniały tam już w połowie XIV wieku. Po kolejnych rozbudowach kościół dysponował co najmniej siedmioma dużymi dzwonami. W wyniku pożaru z 26 kwietnia 1777 roku wszystkie uległy zniszczeniu. Niewielka sygnaturka z końca XVIII wieku nie odpowiadała potrzebom i randze kościoła. Dopiero po zbudowaniu nowej 97-metrowej wieży w 1907 roku słynna firma Schilling z Apoldy zawiesiła 6 dzwonów, które w 1917 roku zostały skonfiskowane. Nowe, o łącznej wadze 10 ton, pojawiły się w 1928 roku. Te również zabrała wojna. Obecne 3 dzwony stalowe pochodzą z rozebranego kościoła św. Anny
