After the Second World War Seraja Szapszała had intended to migrate to Poland but was prevented from doing so by the Soviet authorities and he continued to live in Soviet Lithuania instead. He worked for the Institute of History and Law in the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. He was also involved in preserving the Karaite past in Lithuanian lands. His efforts included opening an ethnographic museum in Trakai before WWII. Szapszał composed a letter to Stalin in which he hoped to protect his own life as well as Karaite ethnographic collections.

Szapszał completed his study in 1949 and hoped to have it printed in Lithuania. Jablonskis’ critical remarks focused on a number of historical aspects of the Karaite past. However, it remains an important contribution to a specific academic debate.

The text presents the profile of Lidia Okulewiczówna-Hansen, assistant to the outstanding turkologist and expert on Eastern culture, prof. Serai Shapshal. The text presents the activities of the Turkologists' Circle, which operated at The Eastern European Scientific-Research Institute in Vilnius. The fate of the Karaim museum after World War II is briefly presented: the nationalization of its collections and the everyday life of Hajj Serai Shapshal.

Tekst prezentuje działalność Koła Turkologów, które działało przy Instytucie Naukowo-Badawczym Europy Wschodniej w Wilnie. Krótko są przedstawione losy muzeum karaimskiego po II wojnie światowej: nacjonalizacja jego zbiorów i życie codzienne hadży Serai Szapszała.

The teaching of the Turkish language in Poland posed many problems for teachers as there were no appropriate materials which could be used during lessons. Seraya Shapshal’s “Wypisy tureckie” (“Turkish Chrestomathy”) was the first comprehensive textbook that helped students learn Turkish. “Wypisy” consists of texts dealing with a variety of topics as well as a Turkish–Polish dictionary. This book is a good example of the difficulties a teacher or writer faces when preparing suitable materials. “Wypisy” was written in 1931–1932 and published in Vilnius; it is 140 pages in length, 83 pages of which are given over to the Turkish–Polish dictionary. The entire book was handwritten, which is probably the main reason why it contains many typos, i.e. the Turkish characters are written in the wrong way. In this paper only the first chapter is analysed, namely “Kolay Cumleler” (“Easy sentences”). The analysis focuses on grammatical (phonology, morphology, syntax) and lexical issues presented to the students in the initial phase of their Turkish language instruction.
