The new Law on Higher Education and Science introduced a new measure for the evaluation of universities in Poland – the impact of scientific activity on the functioning of society and the economy. The aim of this article is to outline the possibilities of universities and scientists in regard to the dissemination of research within two main areas of action. One of them concerns professional efforts towards facilitating access to academic publications (open access publishing, posting articles on platforms and databases for scholars and research institutions, or establishing scientific profiles and university knowledge bases). The second area concerns the popularisation of research in the media by means of public relations (especially media relations). This article presents the view that coordinated activities in those two areas are of key importance for increasing scientific visibility. The ways in which research issues are presented in the media have been shown in the example of media coverage at the University of Gdańsk. The investigation has shown that dissemination of research and science in the media requires increasing the role of professional communicators, for it is possible to shape the agenda setting of academic research using instruments of public relations, taking advantage of the newsworthy character of media coverage.

Objective – Libraries play various important roles in the contemporary society. They contribute to the advancement of intellectual and social capital and offer economic benefits to their surroundings. The paper provides an overview of the main approaches to research on the library impact on the community which are: information exchange and information literacy impact, research, education, cultural, economic outcomes and impact on social inclusion. The paper presents methods and tools that currently are tested and used to evaluate the issue in question. Research methods - The following methods were used: the critical analysis of the literature, the description of methods and results of research on social impact of libraries on their surroundings, the analysis of world research initiatives related to the development of methods and tools used for the evaluation of the impact of libraries on the community. Results and conclusions – Research on social benefits of library performance has recently gained considerable attention in the world and the research methods in this field evolve, too. More investigation is needed to identify methods that could be used to show libraries’ overall impact or to develop measures that would permit benchmarking between institutions.

Cel – W artykule przedstawiono różnorodne i jednocześnie ważne role bibliotek we współczesnym społeczeństwie. Instytucje te niewątpliwie przyczyniają się do rozwoju kapitału intelektualnego i społecznego, a także korzyści materialnych swojego otoczenia. Celem artykułu jest charakterystyka głównych nurtów badań w zakresie oddziaływania usług biblioteczno-informacyjnych na społeczność. Przedstawiono również stosowane obecnie metody i narzędzia jego oceny. Metody badań - Dla potrzeb realizacji wyznaczonego celu zastosowano metodę analizy i krytyki literatury przedmiotu, jak również opisu metodologii i rezultatów badań społecznego wpływu bibliotek na otoczenie oraz analizę światowych inicjatyw badawczych związanych z kształtowaniem metod i narzędzi stosowanych w ocenie wpływu bibliotek na otoczenie społeczne. Wyniki i wnioski – Badania społecznych korzyści z funkcjonowania bibliotek w ostatnich latach rozwijają się dość prężnie na świecie. Rozwija się także metodologia omawianego przedmiotu badań. Warto prowadzić dalsze prace związane z rozwojem metod oceny wpływu bibliotek na otoczenie społeczne oraz tworzyć wskaźniki służące porównaniu ich działań w omawianym zakresie.
