Elementarnym filarem liberalnego porządku społeczno-ekonomicznego jest wolność. Właściwie pojmowana wolność determinuje nie tylko stosunki społeczno- -polityczne (organizację społeczeństwa i państwa), ale i ekonomiczne. W sensie ekonomicznym wolność z jednej strony kształtuje stosunki własnościowe (określa relacje między dobrem jednostki a ogółu, kształtuje warunki podziału), a z drugiej determinuje zakres swobody jednostki w gospodarce (swobody wymiany oraz konkurencji) z uwzględnieniem relacji z państwem. Zdefiniowana w ten sposób wolność rodzi zarówno pozytywne, jak i negatywne efekty, a więc prowokuje do dyskusji i zachęca do formułowania alternatywnych koncepcji (często o zabarwieniu idealnym) określających relacje między wolnością (wolnością jednostki w zakresie posiadania i dysponowania własnością) a prawami i obowiązkami państwa.

The fundamental pillar of the liberal socio-economic order is freedom. Properly understood freedom determines not only socio-political relations (the organisation of society and state) but also economic ones. In the economic sense, freedom on the one hand shapes ownership relations (defines the relationship between the good of the individual and commonalty, the conditions of division), and determines the scope of the individual`s economic freedom (freedom of exchange and competition), with respect to the state. The freedom defined in this way gives rise to both positive and negative effects, and thus provokes discussion and encourages the formation of alternative concepts (often idealistic) that define the relationship between freedom (the individual’s freedom to own and command the property) and the rights and duties of the state.
