Wielkie wydarzenia sportowe, tzn. mega events, do których należą igrzyska olimpijskie mają istotny polityczny wymiar. Niezależnie od ustroju rządy wielu państw chętnie angażują się w organizację sportowych mega events. Państwa wykorzystują je jako platformę do zaprezentowania się w środowisku międzynarodowym – służą one jako symbole prestiżu oraz wysokiego poziomu rozwoju i mogą przyczyniać się do rozwoju potencjału soft power. Celem tego artykułu jest analiza politycznego znaczenia igrzysk olimpijskich, które odbyły się w 1968 roku w mieście Meksyk oraz zbliżających się igrzysk w Rio de Janeiro w 2016 roku, dla obydwu państw gospodarzy.

Sports mega events such as the Olympic Games have a great political salience. Governments in regimes of every type show a strong willingness to engage in bidding for and hosting sports megaevents. States benefit by showcasing themselves internationally – hosting sports mega events serve as powerful symbols of a high level of development and prestige and can lead to an increase on so-called soft power. The objective of this article is to examine the political significance of the Olympic Games in Mexico City which took place in 1968 and the forthcoming Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 for both host countries.
