„Korespondencje konstantynopolitańskie” Józefa Ignacego Kraszewskiego

The manuscript collections of the Jagiellonian Library contain a part of correspondence between the renowned Polish novelist and publisher Józef Ignacy Kraszewski and Stanisław Chlebowski, a Polish painter living in Turkey. It includes 25 letters from Chlebowski to Kraszewski from 1852–1879 (call numbers: rkps 6462, 6491, 8917) and 13 letters from Kraszewski to Chlebowski from 1863–1879 (call number: 11672). One of the topics addressed in the letters is Chlebowski’s agency in finding an informer who would send to Paris confidential reports – “correspondances” in French – on current political and military events in Turkey. Chlebowski actually found such an informer – [Victor] Marie de Launaya, whose original letter is also in the Jagiellonian Library (call number: rkps 6491).

The article aims at presenting the figure of the painter Maria first married name Chlebowska second married name Madeyska née Mikułowska (1864-1936). Maria attended the Adrian Baraniecki Higher Courses for Women. Her artistic interests would have most likely remained but a maiden’s hobby, had she not met Stanisław Chlebowski in 1876. The painter noticed her talent, encouraged her to continue her education in this direction, and even supported her financially. In 1880, Maria married Stanisław, and then left with him for Paris where he had been living for several years. Under her husband’s guidance, the young painter created works showing Oriental genre scenes and still lifes. In Paris, Chlebowska’s works were appreciated and purchased, among others, by representatives of New York art dealers, the Knoedlers. Maria’s oeuvre was also noticed by the Polish press. Her promising painter’s career was, however, interrupted by her husband’s sudden disease which forced them to leave Paris. After Chlebowski’s death (1884). No traces have been found of her artistic output after 1894.

This article discusses 487 private letters of a sultan’s painter, Stanisław Chlebowski (1835-1884) to Józef Ignacy Kraszewski and to his family settled in Cracow. The aim of the text is to analyze the linguistic aspect of the correspondence, including particularly the lexis and phraseology, which indicate the characteristics of the work, everyday life and social contacts of the author and the major Polish artists: Juliusz Kossak, Wojciech Kossak, Jan Matejko, Henryk Siemiradzki and Jacek Malczewski.

The considerations set out in the article are the reason for the studies on idiolects of extraordinary creative persons of the past ages. The basis for the study is 487 private letters of a Sultan’s painter – Stanisław Chlebowski (1835–1884), sent to the family settled in Krakow, and J.I. Kraszewski, living in Drezno. The aim of the discussion is the analysis of a linguistic layer of correspondence, including especially the lexical part and phraseology, which allow for a reconstruction of the artist-painter self-portrait – his self-assessment of own works, attitude towards art, creative work, signs of everyday life and social contacts of the sender. The examined means of linguistic discourse externalize the internal states of the writer, his emotional and evaluative attitude towards the presented content, especially himself.
