Stanisław Głąbiński (1862–1941) professor at the Lvov University, the author of a two volume work entitled „National economics” is a representative of the historical-national trend in Polish economics. The subject matter of his concept of national economics is the national economy which is a higher rank entity, encompassing all economic entities in the country that are related materially and spiritually. Bonds that link individuals into a higher rank entity, i.e. a nation, are reflected in the term ‘social resources’. Głąbiński understands them as moral and material heritage of past generations that influences attitudes of the contemporary generation. He divides them into moral and material resources, and especially emphasizes the importance of the former ones. In the concept of moral resources, Głąbiński included his claims concerning the whole socio-ethical conditions of economic processes. He appreciated the influence exerted by the changes in the ethical viewpoint of the society on the economic activity as well as on the shaping of the sense of duty towards the whole society. Special emphasis placed in Głąbiński’s economic theory on the role of ethical motives undoubtedly springs from the influence exerted by the German historical school and, in particular, by Bruno Hildebrand. It also is a result of the effect of Polish economic thought including in particular the views of Fryderyk Skarbek and Józef Supiński. According to Głąbiński, the most important constituent element of material resources was finance, understood by him as stocks of economic goods.

Stanisław Głąbiński (1862–1941) was a lawyer, economist and politician, who in the frst period of his activity was related to the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Elected to the Austrian State Council (1902), and then to the National Parliament (1904), he made a rapid career. Particularly he was criticised by conservatists from Cracow, who feared that their infuences in Galicia would be diminished. Political and ethnic conficts, the reform of electoral regulations and the so-called “canal issue” provided an opportunity for Cracow conservatists to remove Głąbiński from direct infuence on politics and to make him resign from the position of the president of the Polish Circle. In 1911 Głąbiński received the ministry of railway in the government created by Richard Bienerth. Which was the beginning of the deterioration of Głąbiński’s political position on the Galician political scene.

Stanisław Głąbiński (1862–1941) to prawnik, ekonomista i polityk, który w pierwszym okresie swojej działalności naukowej i politycznej związał się z monarchią austro-węgierską. Wybrany do austriackiej Rady Państwa (1902 r.), a następnie do Sejmu Krajowego (1904 r.) robił szybką karierę polityczną.

The article contains an analysis of the scientific achievements and views of the economist Stanisław Głąbiński, associated with Lviv. Polish economic thought in the interwar period developed in two opposite directions: theoretical and historical. The first of them dominated in the Krakow, Poznań and Warsaw centers, while the second was represented by economists associated with the Lviv and Warsaw centers. Głąbiński was the leading representative of the historical course at the University of Lviv. His economic views as well as political, social and economic activities deserve attention. Głąbiński’s socio-economic concepts were a reflection of his political views. His most important works from the period of the Second Polish Republic, ie two volumes of National Economics (Theory of National Economics – 1927 and National Economic Policy – 1928) and History of Economics – 1939 (volumes 1 and 2) are the best proof of this. Głąbiński has always tried to look at the essence of economic phenomena from the national point of view. Throughout his scientific activity he also proclaimed the creation of a new school in the science of economics – a national school whose theoretical basis would be the nation and the national idea. He left the individualism of the liberal school and examined the economic reality through the prism of national interest. He claimed that an abstract analysis of a personal interest that omits the national interest is only a hypothesis that does not explain the economic reality. Therefore, he proposed to supplement abstract research with research on the whole socio-economic reality: historical analyzes and comparison of the personal interest of economic entities with the general interest.
