A review of the Susan Sontag's Diaries from 1947–1963. Acording to author Diaries are rather sketch than a portrait of Sontag. She is creating herself in process of writing, documenting harsh realationships, discovering her identity and constantly, stubbornly intelectualy improving herself.

The article contains two parts. In the first, the Author describes the theoretical background for analysing the photographs by an American controversial artist – Joel-Peter Witkin; the analysis is carried out in the second part of the paper. The realistic, authenticity-oriented visions of W. Benjamin, R. Barthes or S. Sontag are confronted with Witkin’s creativeness spirit – clearly manipulating in matters of the order of reality (and its rules of appearance) and photographical stuff. This attitude is supported by François Soulages’ views on aesthetics.

The object of the article is to assess whether the concepts of erotica and the erotic can be identified with the hermeneutic interpretation of art as understood by Hans‑Georg Gadamer. The starting point of the discussion is Susan Sontag’s essay ‘Against interpretation’, in which the concept of the erotic interpretation of art is outlined and which culminates with the author setting up a deliberate opposition between the erotics of art and hermeneutics. The present article is an attempt to present the issue of the eroticism of hermeneutic interpretation on the basis of Sontag’s essay, and thus a response to the provocation contained in this essay. In the final part of the text, another possible approach to the issue of the postulated eroticism of hermeneutics is presented. The first part of the present article is devoted to explaining what Sontag means when she writes about the erotics of art and hermeneutics. The next part will demonstrate the connections and similarities between the concept of erotic art presented by Sontag and Gadamer’s concept of the hermeneutic interpretation of art. In the third part of the article I present Gadamer’s proposition and answer the question of whether the hermeneutic interpretation of art can be erotic. The final part of the article is devoted to invoking additional arguments for linking erotics and hermeneutics, followed by a summary.

Joanna Tokarska-Bakir in an interview with Irena Grudzińska GrossThis conversation with Irena Grudzińska-Gross starts a series of interviews in “Studia Litteraria et Historica”, which motto is the title of the essay of Jan Stanisław Bystroń “On subjects I was advised not to pursue”. Among these subjects that Irena Grudzińska-Gross names are: war, family history, women.  Grudzińska-Gross tells also about the reactions to “Złote Żniwa” - a book that she wrote together with Jan Tomasz Gross, and about academic work of people of Eastern Europe living in the United States. One part of the interview concerns also a “collective hypnosis”, that Americans underwent after the 9/11 World Trade Center Attack and the price, that Susan Sontag had to pay for being critical about American militarism. Między brakiem a nadmiarem. Susan Sontag - zapomniana matka?

The article discusses new and republished translations of Susan Sontag’s work, recently launched by the Karakter publishing house: Regarding the Pan of Others, On Photography, and Against Interpretation and Other Essays. The article focuses on the elements of Sontag’s thought that make her a forgotten mother of feminist and gender theoreticians, as well as such influential critics as Michel Foucault and Roland Barthes. The article points out to continuations of Sontag’s thought in contemporary theoretical and social projects, and to the pertinence of her critical observations on theories based on metaphysics of presence: psychoanalysis, Marxism, or hermeneutics. The article also touches upon history of war photography and related war journalism, and upon the ambivalent quality of imaging of the misery of war. It also present historical and cultural circumstances of the development of Sontag’s thought in the intellectual milieu of New York in the 1960s. The discussion recapitulates the main statements of Sontag’s essays, relating them to a wider theoretical context, which is aimed at a reappraisal of the forgotten intelectual in the history of literature.

W artykule podjęto refleksję nad kulturowymi i politycznymi implikacjami konferencji pisarzy środkowoeuropejskich i rosyjskich, która odbyła się w maju 1988 roku w Lizbonie, w kontekście dalszego rozwoju wydarzeń w naszym regionie. Implikacje te określone są jako „syndrom kulturowej straty”. Wychodząc od konstatacji, iż z przyczyn politycznych i koniunkturalnych debata ta, zamiast zogniskować uwagę mieszkańców krajów podbitych przez Związek Sowiecki, stała się wyciszonym wydarzeniem, autor omawia istotne problemy, jakie ona odsłoniła, gdy ująć ją w postkolonialnej retrospektywie: brak transmisji pomiędzy treścią wystąpień a ówczesną potoczną świadomością odnośnych społeczeństw; trwałą podrzędność środkowo-wschodnioeuropejskich literatur w skali globalnej kultury; problem języka komunikacji; trwałe przejawy skolonizowania; chroniczne zewnętrzne wyzwania nękające środkowo-wschodnioeuropejską tożsamość; asymetrię wzajemnych stosunków; imperialne tabu; „miękkie” istnienie Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej; antykolonialny wydźwięk środkowoeuropejsko-rosyjskiej konfrontacji; brak perspektyw postkolonialnego pojednania. Pomimo pesymizmu płynącego z fiaska lizbońskiego wydarzenia, w konkluzji wskazany zostaje naprawczy potencjał literatury, która zdolna jest wywołać zmianę w sferze polityki.

The paper reflects on the missing cultural and political implications of the once-prominent and now forgotten 1988 Lisbon Conference for East Central European societies, taking Poland as a case study. The Conference debates between East Central European, East South European, and Russian writers were virtually absent at that time from Polish public discourse for political reasons, and its potential importance was soon overshadowed by the events of 1989. After the demise of communism the Lisbon Conference was ignored and forgotten, while its intellectual vigor and rhetorical appeal seemed to have been raised in vain. Thus, the Conference was never given a chance to generate a cross-fertilization of ideas, whether in Poland or elsewhere in the post-communist world, so as to transform the mutual perceptions and understanding of the two contending sides: East Central European societies as the subalterns and the Russians as the ex-hegemon. Consequently, the Conference, along with the arguments raised by its participants, has remained yet another “blank spot” in these countries’ intellectual history. It has not influenced the relations between East Central European and Russian intellectual and cultural elites, thus postponing the possibility of bringing the discussion onto a postcolonial track and in effect delaying postcolonial reconciliation.
