The text presents the professional career of Kazimierz Jaskot, the first rector of the University of Szczecin. It presents the background of social processes that took place in the People’s Republic of Poland with the particular attention to years 1982–1989 – the period when Kazimierz Jaskot was the Rector of the Pedagogical College and the and co-organizer of the University of Szczecin, and from the academic year 1985/86 – the first rector of the university. As he operated in specific conditions, one may ask the question of whether and how he used, in the interests of science and higher education, his position in the circle of the political and administrative decision-makers of that time. Author of the text in the years 1975–2007 was the head of the National Archives in Szczecin and at that time, while operating within the scientific community, he knew the characters mentioned within the text.

The article presents the steps that lead to the creation of the University of Szczecin, as they were reported in “Rzeczpospolita”. The newspaper was the instrument of propaganda and information front of government in Poland in the 80s of the twentieth century. The text has the feature a chronicle text of factual reports about the idea of the University of Szczecin in the pages of the official daily newspaper of the cabinet of Wojciech Jaruzelski. It also contains the minimum necessary explanations of the broader political and social context of the first half of the 80s in the 20th century.

The article describes the characteristics of the biography of Professor Kazimierz Jaskot. He is presented as a scholar, an organizer and a social activist. In the area of scientific activity some of the most significant pieces of work are presented. The article also features the characteristic of Kazimierz Jaskot as an academic teacher. In the area of social activity the commitment of Professor towards the youth organizations, the Polish Scouting Association, is highlighted. What is mentioned also is his contribution to the Szczecin branch of Research Institute of Problems of Youth.Discussing organizational skills of Kazimierz Jaskot the focus is on his persistent and effective actions that contributed to the creation of the University of Szczecin and the same determination and organizational abilities that have resulted in the Higher School of Humanities in Szczecin.
