Kocourek25 observes that the concern for conciseness “constitutes a strong factor in the building of technoscientific sentences.” The purpose does not seem to produce short sentences but to add semantic charge to sentences without unnecessarily making them longer. He speaks of “syntactic condensation” leading to a “concise complexity” of the sentences. In our didactic practice at the Higher Institute of Translators and Interpreters (ISTI), we use a reference corpus of different specialised texts. The analysis of this corpus does confirm that the tendency to condensation implies the creation of specialised terminologies according to morphological models which make it possible to better synthesise complex knowledge, to show up hyponymic relations, and to make coreference easier.

The paper presents a new corpus-driven method for automatic term recognition (ATR) based on data-mining techniques. In our research, ATR is seen as a valuable resource for the theory of terminology. The main goal of our approach is not the recognition of terms in given academic disciplines but rather a contribution to the definition of the notion “term”. The basis for such definition improvement is provided by feature-ranking, which is a built-in function of the data-mining tools and is able to determine the impact of individual statistical and linguistic features of word-forms on the accuracy of the ATR method. One of the basic characteristics of a term, its terminological strength (or termhood) depends on the combination of the most significant features in a given word-form.

The study deals with the motivation of architectural terms used by art historians for descriptions of monuments from the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque period. Introductorily, the author points out the relevance of research into lexical motivation and further on discusses the theory of motivation, including motivation types, motivation–saturation and motive. The research focuses proper on the comparison of motivation – saturation and frequency of motivation types in the sample of the Slovak and German art-historical descriptions of monuments. The results indicate similar extent of motivation-saturation in both language variants of the sample. Moreover, the frequented motives are presented with examples in more details.
