The time that has elapsed since the publication of the new textbook reviewed here gave university students and lecturers an opportunity to have registered its advantages and possible shortcomings. The author reviews the contents of the textbook from exactly that point of view. The book discusses the theoretical foundations of historical linguistics, and presents an extensive history of Hungarian: the history of spelling, phonology, word stock and parts of speech, morphology, phrasal and clausal syntax, and - as a novelty - the historical text linguistics of Hungarian are discussed period by period, followed by a chapter on the history of word semantics that concludes the book. The book is up-to-date both in its approach and presentation and with respect to the body of scholarly knowledge it carries. It is a significant achievement not only as a textbook but also as a concise synthesis of the history of Hungarian: it is especially with respect to the more recent periods that a large amount of recent research is first reported on in a coherent manner. The periodization of the history of Hungarian is also revised: Present-Day Hungarian is distinguished from Modern Hungarian, with 1920 as the dividing line between them. As a didactic feature, we have to mention the sets of exercises attached to individual sections of the chapters, serving creative application of the knowledge just acquired by the students.

Figured bass instruction, which was fundamental for organ playing, was at a high level among Franciscans in Slovakia in the 19th and 20th centuries. They used authoritative textbooks, whether in translations – the Czech-language, though strongly Slovakized, translation of an older textbook by J. D. Heinichen Neu erfundene und gründliche Anweisung [...] zu volkommener Erlernung des General-Basses (1711), and the Slovak translation of J. G. Albrechtsberger’s textbook Neue vermehrte Auflage der Kurzgefassten Methode den Generalbass zu erlernen (c. 1791) – or their own Latin textbook Praxis Authentica Pulsandi Organum (c. 1768) by P. Pantaleon Roškovský OFM, which he compiled according to handbooks by M. Gugl (1719), J.B. Samber (1704), J.D. Heinichen (1728), as well as J.J. Fux (1725) and other authors.

Adopting a research perspective characteristic of feminist linguistics, the author examines several textbooks and teaching aids that have been published since 2004, the year Poland entered the European Union and the gender mainstreaming strategy was systematically applied in all areas of social and political life. The analysed texts include both positive examples of the application of the linguistic symmetry principle or a gender-neutral language, and examples of extremely androcentric linguistic messages.

The aim of the paper is to signal the need for textbooks of history of physics, astronomy and mathematics to gain a rightful place in Polish literature. The fundamental work devoted to the history of the exact sciences in Poland is 'Bibliografia pismiennictwa polskiego z dzialu matematyki i fizyki oraz ich zastosowan' (A bibliography of Polish writings in the field of mathematics and physics and their applications) by Teofil Zebrawski. The work was published in 1873 and covers 342 manuscripts and printed publications by Polish authors since the Middle Ages until the 1830s. The current paper reviews textbooks of the history of physics, astronomy and mathematics from the middle of the 18th century until the end of the 20th century. The discussion in the paper focuses on the subject matter of the textbooks, and the scientific achievements of their authors: physicists, astronomers, mathematicians and historians of science. The bibliography of the textbooks discussed covers 100 items.

This paper elucidates the music education of women on the territory of Slovakia in the late of the 18th and early the 19th centuries, in the context of the development of piano art. The musical activity of women is traced, and the measure of their interest in piano art is estimated, using period testimonies and reflections on women’s artistic activities in writings of the time. A number of aspects of the professional activity of women are outlined, with a primary focus on teaching piano playing. The paper presents manuscripts of music textbooks from the first decades of the 19th century, whose authorship, ownership, or possible elaboration we ascribe to women.

Textbooks are unique teaching tools as they are the primary means by which the results of the specialized research are modified to be used in educational process. Textbooks are therefore most commonly used professional material which has gradually come into the centre of attention of researchers and specialized institutions. Textbooks, textbook policy and their structure have undergone regular transformations in history. However, as it happened, they did not always reflect the actual state of historical research, and each period gave preference to selected topics and themes. Great Moravia is a good example of such didactic-historical topic. The article focuses on the context of Great Moravia and its representation in expository texts in Slovak and Czech history textbooks for secondary schools. It deals with the use of facts, the length of the text, presentation of the topic in a wider context, its place within educational standards, the use of sources, study questions and the use of additional material.

Manuscript textbooks from the first half of the 19th century are, in our judgment, predominantly non-original works deriving from specific printed models, of whose reception they are documentary evidence. In a number of instances there is also an adaptation of the printed models’ texts. We ascribe to Johanna Roth the authorship of the manuscript Základy nástrojovej hudby (Fundamentals of Instrumental Music), focusing on piano playing (Primæ, Lineæ, Musicæ Instrumenalis) and dating from 1816. In our paper we present a comparison of this textbook with Johann Samuel Beyer’s textbook on singing (Anweisung zur Singe Kunst, 1703). Detailed attention is devoted to the music genre characterisation of the works in the textbook’s practical section. To Johanna Roth we ascribe a possible authorship of a textbook of basic doctrine on music and the thoroughbass (Musikalische Frag-Stückh; Haupt-Regel des rechten General-Basses). This work is derived from a work by Daniel Speer (Grund-richtiger Kurtz – Leicht – und Nöthiger jetzt Wohl- vermehrter Unterricht der Musicalischen Kunst, 1697). We present the theme in the context of the development of music education and the diffusion of music-theoretical writing during the first half of the 19th century in Slovakia.

Ethnic politics after the liberation and restoration of the Republic of Czechoslovakia in 1945 was to a large extent determined by the results of the Second World War, and the overall course of liberation struggle. Compared to other national minorities in Slovakia Ruthenians and Ukrainians were created relatively favourable political conditions. Possess civil rights and some specific minority rights, as shown, inter alia, the development of national education. With the restoration of war-torn economy after the liberation, however, began to successfully advance the development of the Ukrainian minority schools. Their further growth was hampered by the lack and poor condition of school buildings, lack of qualified teachers in many schools lacked basic textbooks and teaching aids, which were characterized by the fragmented language of instruction etc.
