This article takes stock of ten years of the Ceska kniznice (A Czech Library) editions. It considers the selection of the works published and the varying quality and forms of editorial commentary in them. He also briefly considers the editorial principles used in the editions. The author concludes that the books in the Ceska kniznice are linked together more by their outward appearance than by their content.

This article considers Velky zivot Krista, a Czech edition of Leben Christi, Baroque verse by Martin von Cochem (1634-1712). The author analyzes the literary nature of the published text, and the suitability of the editorial commentary, the rules of transcription, and the approaches to interpretation. With respect to future editions, he considers the general trends and missed opportunities of publishing Early Modern Czech literature today.

This contribution presents the planned critical hybrid edition of the works of Frantisek Gellner (1881-1914) and Karel Hlavacek (1874-1898), which is currently being prepared by the Publications Department of the Institute of Czech Literature, Prague. This is a reader's edition of a critically verified text (without extensive commentary or bibliographical information) published as a paper book as well as a DVD, hence the word 'hybrid' in the title of the edition. The second part of the article explains the approaches used in the editing of the manuscripts and the recording of variant readings.

This article presents our programme written in view of it being taken advantage of by the literary scholars' milieu, particularly, those dealing with textology and scientific editorship. The programme enables clear presentation of differences between various versions of a text. We try to describe to the reader a general idea of how the program may operate and to make them aware of the barriers limiting the programme.

The paper is concerned with the editions of fiction works associated with the name of the evangelical preacher and teacher Ladislav Bartolomeides. In the first part the subject of the analysis is Bartolomeides´s reeditions of two Czech translations: a popular didactic satire Spis užitečný a velmi potřebný od Doktora Grobiana z upřímnosti učinený (A Useful and Really Necessary Treatise by Doctor Grobian Written in a Honest Manner, 1784) translated from German into Czech around the end of the 16th century and a work written by the ancient historian Josephus Flavius O válce židovské knihy sedmery (Seven Books on the Jewish War, 1805), which was translated from Latin by Pavel Aquilinus Hradecký (1533). The analysis shows the goal and the motives of Bartolomeides´s editorial activities and analyses the extent of the changes he made to the texts. The second part of the paper deals with editorial possibilities of presenting Bartolomeides´s original work Rozmlouvání Jozefa Druhého s Matějem Prvním Korvínus řečeným v království zemřelých (A Dialogue between Joseph II and Matthias I Corvinus in the Kingdom of the Dead, 1790), in which the form of the Lucianesque dialogue is joined with the defence of the monarch Joseph II. In order to assess all the functions of the text objectively there has been an idea to publish all the three versions together – the diplomatic transcription, the transcribed form and the translation into contemporary Slovak.

The article deals with the several textological and editorial problems of Slovak literature in the 17th – 18th century which fundamentally differs from those of the research and publishing of literary texts in later periods. With regard to her long-term view of the subject the author draws attention to the differences in three essential textological principles defining text features. 1. The understanding of the notions authorial subject and authenticity of his/her literary production; 2. the degree and character of preservation of text sources, 3. the unsettleness and unstableness of the prescribed forms of the domestic literary language (particularly the issue of literary texts written in Latin, German etc.). At the same time she critically reflects the current situation in Slovak textology and editorial practice. The causes of its unsatisfactory condition cannot only be attributed to the radical change of the basic conditions in the publishing sector after the year 1989.

The author previously published three papers in this journal concerning the world of SMS: on election SMSs (2003), on SMS as electronic graffiti (2004), and on SMS news (2005). In the present, concluding paper of the series, the folklore-type characteristics of SMS messages are investigated, using methods of folkloristics, textology, and anthropological linguistics. The theoretical point of departure is that folklore phenomena do exist irrespective of historical period or social layer. This is the basis of present-day folklore (also known as post-folklore) or, as it is also referred to in this paper: e-folklore, minimalistic folklore, computer folklore, or SMS folklore. Folklore-type characteristics of the techno-cultural world are described in terms of the paradigms of tradition vs. innovation, spoken vs. written communication (mediality), international vs. national aspects, etc. Within e-folklore, the author's special interest lies in SMS folklore. The most typical text types of SMS folklore are discussed in the following thematic order: festive messages, courtship/love, chain letters (forwarded letters), funny/tricky/misleading texts, and maxims. After a folkloristic/linguistic analysis of the corpus, the author states that SMS as a means of social communication offers human relationships, in particular, those formed by folklore messages, not only a novel medium but also a novel quality. It is not simply the case that traditional Christmas, Easter etc. postcards undergo a shift of medium and can be sent as SMS messages from now on. Three features of that novel quality are as follows: (a) extension of the human brain, of folklore memory (SMS storage, internet data bases), (b) automation of contacts: mobile phones and SMS make keeping in touch easy, (c) the psychology of contacts: SMS psychologically alleviates a number of types of inhibition; in other words, messages can be sent by SMS practically uninhibited. It is to be emphasized that although SMS folklore does exhibit anthropological, 'eternally human' characteristics in may ways, it also shows particular features of what is known as post-folklore rather than traditional folklore, due to changes in the general circumstances.

After year 1989 in Slovakia scientific research into textology and editorial practice has not been systematically developed, and therefore Slovak textology and editorial practice has faced stagnation or even regression. The lack of professional competence in publishing the literary works of the past has caused uncontrolled publishing of writings without any detailed analyses of the sources and variants. As a result, there is absence of theoretical thinking about the issues of editorial practice, which is also reflected in the editorial standards and processes. Moreover, the general need of professional approach to editing texts has disappeared. Selected editorial cases of the recent times are used to address the issues of Slovak textological discourse and editorial solutions.

The study is a part of a collective project focused on interpretation of the key Slovak literary works of the 20th C. The aim of it is to read the known and in the case of a work of Frantisek Hecko: 'Cervené vino' (The Red Wine), also the classicised works in confrontation with the previously made interpretations. The starting point for the interpretation is textological; it is a comparison of several editions of The red Wine, while the decisive conceptive differences occur mostly in comparison of the first and all other following editions. The next step of our work was a typological identification of the work. The significant changes of the first edition of the text made by the author himself (1948), having been followed in the all the editions up to now, can be explained predominantly by outside circumstances, that means establishment of the Communist regime in 1948 and a radically new cultural politics, which negated hard plural model of literature having been respected until that time. Hecko adapted to this situation. He responded as an embattled socialistic writer and that was why he reduced in the novel much of that what belongs to the main natural resources of The Red Wine: motives, in which folk Catholicism had appeared, biblical lexical layer, as well as oral and ethic bases characteristic for the Christian cultural model. He changed markedly the end of the novel and he put into it a class aspect - required by the period and the regime. The interpretation is an attempt to reveal the former conceptual bases of Hecko's writing and to point out to the non - organic changes in his novel, which were required by the historical situation.

In the contribution, the author reflects, while drawing on the example of Codexy revúcke, on the practical aspects of the textual work with hand-written collections of the prosaic narratives from the first half of the 19th century that served as a baseline for the editors of fairy tales collections in terms of materials. The author build on the state to date – of the methodology of transcription that was used by Jiří Polívka and Mária Dzubáková – with regard to the possibilities and objectives of publishing of this type of monuments. The contribution is centred on the approximation of the practical problems arising in the process of transcribing of the manuscript into a print medium, then on the approximation and justification of the textual principles that have proved as the most optimal ones in terms of the work of this type so far (in terms of transcription and editorial processing of Codexy tisovské).

The main aim of article is to evaluate the textological and editorial approach and preparation of selected volumes of the Library of Slovak Literature edition, accomplished by the Kalligram publishing house and the Institute of Slovak Literature of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The main attention will be focused on explanatory notes and comments that provably describe and mirror an approach of editors, name problematic places in editorial preparation of new editions and explain solutions that editor had made. The author will focus on the very essence and nature of comments, reasoning and argumentation, potential readers´ benefits or threats of selected editorial approaches and solutions.

When mapping cultural and, more specifically, literary history of the Slovaks living in historical Hungarian Lowland, which is - in terms of contemporary political geography - mainly the territory of Slovak enclaves in Serbia, Hungary and Romania, what appears to be one of the important sources is memoirs, written in various periods of time. In the context of the research into the times at the turn of the 20th century, stretching into the following decades of the 20th century, there are several sources of this kind available in books as well as in manuscripts. The subject of the paper is the issues in editorial processing of the memoirs written by Slovak notables who lived and worked in Lowland, especially in the early 20th century, either all their lives (Ján Čajak) or just for a short time (Ivan Thurzo, Pavel Gallo), alternatively by those who, after moving to Slovakia, contributed to the cultural life of that time (Andrej Mráz). The selected writings are similar in subject. However, what is different is the nature of the preserved materials as well as the size, composition, and especially the way they were presented to the readers. While Čajak´s memoirs have not been published to date, those of Thurzo´s and Gall´s were abridged in comparison with the original manuscript versions, and so were those written by Mráz, which were first published in a magazine and later as a book. The focus is given to the textological principles applied to the book edition, editorial changes made in the manuscripts and the issue of the editor´s authority to change the original text.

Focusing on the late 18th and early 19th occasional poetry, the article discusses the necessity of making accessible to contemporary audiences the works of older Slovak literature. It tackles textological problems such writing poses and addresses issues pertaining to its adequate evaluation from the point of view of literary history. An adequate assessment of the place these texts occupy in the history of the given literature primarily needs to be based on their complex interpretation springing from an intimate knowledge of the text. Making accessible the widest possible corpus of these literary works is therefore an integral part of research of older literature. In 2020, the authors Martin Braxatoris, Ivona Kollárová, Lenka Rišková and Oľga Vaneková published the monograph Príležitosť poézie. Miesto a význam príležitostnej poézie Juraja Palkoviča, Bohuslava Tablica a Pavla Jozefa Šafárika v dejinách slovenskej literatúry [Poetry’s occasion. The place and role of occasional poetry by Juraj Palkovič, Bohuslav Tablic and Pavel Jozef Šafárik in the history of Slovak literature] which, among other things, contains a selection of occasional verse. On the example of this edition, the article describes textological approaches adopted by the authors. Observations outlined in this article wish to inspire future research that would similarly aim at formulating a more exact set of defining principles concerning editorial handling of this type of texts.

The paper comprises a review of researches, mainly monographs and longer theoretical treatises, on the changes of meanings and scopes of the terms 'textology', 'academic editing', 'canonical text' and 'artistic intention'. According to the authoress, the space encompassing the work on the textual basis is too narrow to incorporate two independent disciplines; thus textology and academic editing were given the same goals. Textology, which -as a term - was taken over from Russian science, is understood as a study of text in general. 'Academic editing' seems to be a term closer to the discipline in question. Academic editing - according to the idea contained here - can have exclusively theoretical, or theoretical and practical goals. Its theoretical speculations would deal with the examination of the history of all accounts of the text and with the understanding of the author's intention recorded in drafts, notes and letters. The practical aim would cover the preparation of a critical edition.

The paper deals with the subject of the editorial and textological approaches to the texts of Slovak literature written in Bernolák´s Slovak in the years 1787 – 1852. It analyses their typographic and orthographic particularities, it is concerned with variants of the orthographic standard at that time and presents methodological approaches to the subject of textology and editorial practice. In relation to the texts written in Bernolák´s Slovak, it identifies three editorial approaches which have been used in editorial practice since the mid-19th century. The first approach is represented by the editions which adapt the original language form of a text according to the current orthographic standard and the contemporary typographic rules; the second type is represented by the editions respecting the authentic language form of the original text, while they only eliminate some of the historical, archaic typographic particularities, and the third approach is related to updating literary texts written in Bernolák´s Slovak by translating them into contemporary Slovak. The paper also reflects on the overall approach of editors to texts written in Bernolák´s Slovak as textual sources and based on textological analyses of several editions, it deals with the issue of the quality of individual editorial procedures.

The paper deals with literary and historical mapping of the beginnings of professional reflection of textological and editorial stages of the pre-production in book publishing in Slovakia. It focuses on the attempts at a theoretical grasp of the subject within a given period of time, i.e. from the 1950s to the early 1960s, which can be regarded as a period of time when this scientific branch was being formed in the Slovak environment. It reflects on three fundamental articles, which were published on this subject by Jozef Felix, Karol Rosenbaum and Mikuláš Bakoš and it shows how the authors mentioned above attempted at an early systematization of the knowledge of the branch although their conclusions were first and foremost based on the practical needs of the editorial pre-production for publishing houses. Therefore, the paper also pays attention to the reasons behind it coming to the conclusion that the beginnings of a more systematic thought given to the editorial pre-production stage in book publishing date back to the creation of an important publishing edition, which was the book series Hviezdoslav Library.

The article deals with the research of the reception of ancient apocryphal texts and legends in Ukrainian spiritual songs of the Baroque era. The author has carried out a source-study and textual analysis of the selected Christmas carols from ‘Book of Chants’. This ancient book, which was compiled by the Greek-Catholic Basilian Fathers in the Holy Dormition Lavra in Pochaiv, is a unique Ukrainian anthology of the spiritual music works of the 17th-18th centuries. The apocrypha were an important source of themes of Ukrainian spiritual songs. Ivan Franko, Vladimir Perets, Mykhailo Vozniak, Sofia Shchehlova conducted the first studies of the influence of apocrypha on the texts of spiritual songs. However, in the 1920s the process of studying of this issue stopped. Today, it is possible to carry out a comprehensive source and textual study of the reception of apocryphal in spiritual songs, thanks to the collected database of texts of spiritual songs and to a large number of published texts and their variations. In this article, an attempt has been made to analyse several texts of famous Ukrainian spiritual songs of the second half of the 17th century, which were recorded in the songbooks of the 18th century and published in ‘Book of Chants’. The songbook manuscripts show the widespread popularity of the songs: from Galicia (Halychyna, Western Ukraine) to Belarus, Moscovia / Russia, eastern Slovakia and northeast Poland.
