When we examine the thesauri prepared in the framework of college or university dissertations, we can draw important lessons. The outcomes reveal not only all the common mistakes that are characteristic of LIS students' dissertation works, but also the shortcomings of the teaching of the subject at LIS schools. In these dissertations, Hungarian library standards are sometimes ignored, while problems can be observed in the distinction of conceptual and linguistic levels as well as in interpreting generic relations. The teaching of thesauri cannot be separated from the teaching of the MARC21 and HUNMARC data exchange formats for authority data. LIS students should get thorough and exhaustive training in this field, especially because they will work with these formats on.

Kisfaludy Karoly County Library in Gyor was one of the first public libraries in Hungary to have gained practical experience of using KOZTAURUSZ, the comprehensive Hungarian thesaurus as part of their integrated library system. This study, first presented at the Networkshop 2006 conference, shortly presents the history of subject cataloguing at the library, focuses on the application of KOZTAURUSZ. In 2004, the library applied for state funding for the purchase of a new ILS able to integrate the thesaurus. A detailed report is given on the steps and challenges of the integration of subject terms from the thesaurus into nearly 50,000 document records. The outcome of the integration is an enhanced OPAC, offering a subject search tool for users. At the same time, this type of action can serve as an example of the successful cooperation of librarians and library software developers.

This thesaurus encompassing terms of instruments of percussion - carried out in the framework of a university dissertation - fills a gap in the field of Hungarian terminologies. The exceedingly special terms of the thesaurus brought up special editing problems that were solved with the help of the RELEX thesaurus management program. As a result, the thesaurus became compatible with universal thesauri used at the National Szechenyi Library and other important Hungarian libraries, and its data could be exported into various library and web services in the MARC21 data exchange format for authority data. The article presents the thesaurus entries and related MARC21 formats in detail.

The hierarchy of ontologies based on generic relation is described by exact logical declarations. However, generic hierarchy itself depends on philosophical views and intuition. In other words, depending on aspect and intuition it can be chosen different conceptual hierarchy. The author shows that in generic hierarchy of top-level concepts there are not really unsolvable differences. Which means that the second expected consequence will not be realized. Consequently: however big are the differences between the special hierarchies of the ontologies, by necessity the basis of the apparently different hierarchies is the same concept system. For comparison he used top-level concepts of universal Hungarian Thesaurus (Koztaurus) as a basis. From the results of the comparison it can be concluded that the Hungarian adaptation of the internationally developed ontologies has no significant difficulties.

The construction of a thesaurus of kind of words/form class generates a number of special issues which are not covered by professional literature. In a thesaurus, kinds of words need to be classified into hierarchical structures. Generic hierarchies can only be established with the introduction of new general terms of kinds of words. The new terminology is also necessary for the setting up of a new ontology of kind of words/form class. This article deals with the special structure of kind of words, the main steps of its construction, its use and its potential for further development.

Controlled vocabularies of information languages show a variety of practices. There are varied applications of the same language, two. Common problems are reflected by them, although the theoretical framework of controlled vocabularies can differ. In spite of the differences of information languages, language groups and their applications, they share common features, because they are originated by human activities, involving thinking and speaking. Dominating patterns of a specific information thesaurus are primarily determined by the interaction of the conceptual and linguistic levels. In controlled vocabularies, specific patterns and models can be formed in multiple ways in connection with editing methods; they can be 'inherited' from natural language use, they can derive from the interconnection of conceptual and linguistic levels, or they are determined by the principle of general interdependence. Comparing representative examples of information languages based on different natural languages, and listing selected examples from Hungarian public libraries, the study focuses on the common difficulties of applications that concern the use of information languages in general.
