The role of aesthetics as a science is to examine any expression of aesthetic thinking, evaluate perception and interpretation of created artefacts and analyse options of aesthetic research of the rest of the society and objects commonly on the edge of the interest. Given paper turns the interest on the period of Slovak prehistory (Iron Age) when the development of Europe was dictated by the countries of antic Greece and later by antic Roma, specifically about the period when Thracians and Scythians broke into our space. The aim of the paper is an aesthetic interpretation of chosen objects of this period focusing on analysis of aesthetic norm and evaluation of the consequences of its application in practice and on the final form of the objects. It is also connected with aesthetic function, which is necessarily present in objects retaining on aesthetic norm and generally, it could be identified in any objects.

This article reacts to a recent attempt by Radislav Hošek to reinterpret Eunapius’ report on the gates of Greece having been open to Alaric ‘by the godlessness of those who wear the black robes’. According to the traditional interpretation it had been the Orthodox Christian monks, whom Eunapius had in mind, according to Hošek, however, these black robed individuals were to have been Thracian tribesmen, mentioned also by Plutarch. The article ponders the reasoning behind Hošek’s having abandoned the traditional interpretation and it appears unsubstantiated to the author. On the contrary, the arguments on which Hošek has based his new interpretation, in the author’s opinion come through as insufficient to justify the claim. Therefore, the article suggests a return to the traditional interpretation, which seems to mean less or even no inconvenience.

The article analyses various categories of sources showing the presence of Greeks in inner Thrace since the 7th century B.C.: imported Greek pottery and its impact on local wares, metal vessels and other toreutic works, bronze objects artistic and functional, architecture, inscriptions and graffiti, coins and other phenomena. The evidence shows that in Late Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic periods many Greeks were in inner Thrace as traders, artists and artisans and in other expertises on the courts of Thracian rulers and also in the autonomous emporia like Pistiros.
