The article discusses the subject from Polish professional literature relatively well-described and gradually widely known within professional circles, that is ‘theme tourist routes which use historic and cultural buildings and themes. Considering earlier publications referring to the subject of tourist routes in general [e.g. Kruczek 2007, Szewczyk 2008] and to cultural tourist routes in particular [Mikos v. Rohrscheidt 2008], it is not necessary to repeat the information about the routes and their descriptions. Therefore, the author – apart from presenting the idea of cultural routes in the perspective of Polish and foreign professional literature – focuses reader’s attention on two issues. They are both vital for proper functioning and development of the cultural tourist routes offer in Poland. Moreover, the issues can especially influence the extent to which these products are used by tourism organizers and individual tourists. The first issue regards proper classification of cultural tourist routes, and the problem of consequent use of correct terminology in professional literature, information materials and in setting up the trails. The second one is a set of requirements for creating new and developing the existing cultural tourist routes in Poland.

The article is an outline of the issue of cultural routes management. The professionalization of this kind of routes and the pursuit to make them modern tourist products requires introducing mechanisms and procedures known from the institution, organization and company operation. It will be possible only when the cultural routes are clearly-designed structures with a clearly-outlined hierarchy. It will enable to delegate tasks and competences allowing efficient and effective management of the available potential. It cannot be forgotten that the whole activity must lead to a precisely-defined goal and must be realized according to a drawn-up program. Therefore, apart from the formal side of organization, working out the mission and strategy of developing individual cultural routes is extremely important.

Continuing the initiated in spring 2008 process of establishing the principles for assessing Polish tourist and cultural potential, the author presents the criteria and research methods with regard to the evaluation of Polish cultural tourist routes. The proposals of the unified research standards, presented in the article, and the precise description of the subsequent research stages, are supposed to allow to undertake them independently in many centers throughout the country and, as a result, to lead to creating a map of potential cultural tourism destinations in Poland.

Using culinary heritage is a good way to promote sustainable development of tourism in Lithuania. Most tourist have meals during their trips. As research shows, tourists appreciate tasty and health food. This trend gives the opportunity to promote regional cuisine not only among domestic but also among foreign tourists. Consequently, the promotion of culinary heritage enables other tourist attractions to develop, e.g. Lithuanian folk, traditions and customs of the Lithuanian country, and the less-known regions which sometimes are not along the popular tourist routes. Culinary tourism also allows to adapt some chosen cultural heritage facilities for the needs of tourism. Moreover the regions known for their good cuisine and excellent culinary attractions, can “be discovered” for and by foreign visitors. Culinary tourism in Lithuania becomes more and more popular among tourists and the still-growing number of them set off along the offered culinary heritage routes. They are especially popular among the youngest tourists and the organized groups. The interesting and innovative tourist routes, which enable to experience the Lithuanian cuisine, become a superb tourist attraction for foreign visitors.

The aim of the article is to reflect upon the issue of biographical tourism, its meaning and development prospects in the context of cultural tourism. It is an attempt to answer the following questions: is biographical tourism currently in bloom or in retreat?, and what could boost its development in the future? Biographical tourism is the consequence of the perennial interest in the life and work of outstanding individuals. It grew on the ground of the long-lasting biographical tradition. Its educational meaning in the society is priceless. An increasing number of offers connected with this form of tourism is visible in large tourist centers. Biographies of literary authors, biographical museums (especially the literary ones) as well as biographical trails enjoy the permanent attention especially among lower and higher education students. They participate more and more actively in the process of creating the biographical tourism (by setting routes, gathering materials about outstanding individuals from their regions, etc.). The knowledge gathered along biographical routes is an attractive way of personally getting to know the places connected with famous characters, and it complements the history of culture and literature syllabi at schools and universities. Biographical tourism has a chance to develop further provided it constantly makes its offer more attractive and comprehensive, adjusts it to the needs of modern tourists and creates wide publicity of the biographical routes.
