This paper deals with the first ever Polish printed publication on coffee – "Pragmatographia de legitimo usu ambrozji tureckiej" by Tadeusz Krusiński, published in 1769. The book reveals the presence of coffee in eighteenth-century Poland in both sociological and political contexts. The first part of the paper presents the role that the author of the book played in the process of acquainting the Poles with the Orient. The second part concentrates on the composition of the book and the linguistic peculiarities of the era, which resulted in a bilingual edition of Krusiński’s work. Polish and foreign proverbs concerning coffee are cited. Furthermore, the original Turkish vocabulary related to the culinary culture is introduced. The last part of the paper is devoted to some of the ‘proper ways of preparing and serving coffee’ described by Krusiński. Beliefs about health issues that were widespread in the 18th century are discussed and illustrated with examples taken from the lives of Eastern monarchs, such as white coffee being good for women or that there is a connection between drinking coffee and habitual drinking.
