In this article there have been analysed the bynames and surnames of the South Teschen Silesia region in the period from the end of the 17th till the end of the 19th century. In this period the bynames and surnames were already morphologically formed, however their graphical form was unstable during the whole time. The period has been divided into four parts of evolution taking into account the morphological and graphical forms of the bynames and surnames. They are noted linguistic influences, especially of local dialect, official languages (German) and extralinguistic influences, e.g. the reason of migration. The number of different notations of a byname or surname was decreasing over the course of time. As concerns derived bynames and surnames, it is the most noticeable type with the suffix -ów that originally formed bynames and surnames with patronymical function (occurring only at the beginning of the period under revue) and the suffix -ko showing a falling trend. The suffix -ski which is typical of Polish surnames is not very productive in Teschen Silesia. In the last period concerned there are more surnames with the suffix -ski, but not for the reason of structural changes of the name type, but for the reason of the migration from Poland.

The aim of the paper is to consider such ethnolinguistic categories as magic, connotation, and cognitive blending as possible keys to the following questions: How is it possible that we can perfectly adopt different representations of the past and internalize them as our past? How can we reconcile different representations of the past and how is it possible that diverse representations of the past merge in one social memory? Such amalgamations of various forms of representations and diverse scales of objectification can be clarified by means of the theory of magic, by means of the law of resemblance, and the law of contiguity. Such considerations are supported here by empirical study of the construction of social memories in Teschen Silesia, which was divided between Poland and Czechoslovakia in 1920. On both sides of the new border different state institutions emerged and influenced local memories.

Article presents the national attitudes of railway workers in the region mostly inhabited by Polish and German minority. Czechoslovak railway administration with the collaboration of nationalistic organizations (especially Matice osvěty lidové pro Těšínsko a Hlučínsko) tried to increase the number of Czech railway workers and demanded from them contribution to the czechization efforts. The administration used the policy of relocation and other means of pressure on workers of Polish and German nationality to convince them to support the Czech cause, especially by sending their children to Czech schools.
