The authors consider the political and legal aspects of introducing single-member constituencies and the fi rst-past-the-post voting method in elections to the European Parliament. Their main concern is its legal admissibility in the Polish legal system and the possible political benefi ts. The single-member constituencies are being proposed as a means to cope with the EU’s democratic defi cit. Adopting a more direct system of elections is also carefully analyzed in the context of the binding legislation and the case law of the Polish Constitutional Tribunal.
