The paper deals with the phenomenon of new religious movements, sects and cults from the perspective of the Catholic Church and the theology of Catholic tradition. The paper presents published documents from various Roman Catholic secretariats and councils from 1986 up until 2012. It also pays attention to selected figures of Catholic theological tradition interested in the world of new religious movements. The document of the International theological commission entitled Theology Today: Perspectives, Principles and Criteria (2011) was an impulse for reflection on sects and new religious movements. The emergence of new religions in the 20th century is presented as an opportunity for Christian Catholic tradition to recognise them as “signs of the times” (c.f. Gaudium et spes 4; Theology today II. 6.).

The aim of the article is to present the document Theology Today: Perspectives, Principles and Criteria by the International Theological commission from the point of view of biblical scholarship. It firstly shortly introduces the three biblical scholars involved in the preparation of the document and makes certain general remarks about its connection to exegesis. It consequently discusses closely the Biblical basis of the twelfth criterion proposed: theology as wisdom and as science. Finally, it connects certain conclusions to the contemporary situation of theology in the pluralistic world.

The post-conciliar Catholic theology in the West is experiencing a significant crisis of its identity. Theologians take an active part in the contemporary social and political discourse but their academic work is often in opposition to the doctrinal and moral teaching of the Catholic Church. In the document Theology Today issued in 2012, the International Theological Commission presents a positive image of Catholic theology. The document indicates the basic criteria of Catholic theology. It also emphasises the relationship of theology with the living Christian faith and the vocation of theologians to preach the faith. The document points out that authentic Catholic theologyis impossible without fidelity to the Church and to its authoritative teaching.
