The article undertakes an important interdisciplinary topic placed on the boundary between sociological and economic analysis. The author discusses Turkish immigrant work force settled in Austria. The role and place these immigrants occupy in the local social and economic structure reflects on the subjectivity of an individual and on their capability to directly and indirectly impact their environment. Conclusions presented at the end of the article indicate a surprising correlation or interdependence: a long tradition of migration, and extensive historical and cultural links do not translate into a strong position on the labour market. The author tries to answer the question why.

The article analyses dynamics of social capital that can explain how Turkish immigrants in Finland become self-employed and why they have established themselves within a particular economic sector. The mixed embeddedness perspective on ethnic and immigrant entrepreneurship is utilised to achieve a better understanding of these processes. The interview study indicates that immigrants are able to establish ethnic economies also in countries with relatively small and geographically dispersed immigrant populations. Immigrant entrepreneurs can mobilise transnational social capital for the establishment of businesses, but only under circumstances where transnational resources can be utilised as a local resource. To understand the dynamics of immigrants businesses requires an analysis of the embeddedness of immigrants in a simultaneously transnational and local social context.

The purpose of the study is to examine the degree of convergence or divergence of Turkish immigrants’ work values in Germany when compared to Turks’ and Germans’ work values. The importance of Turkish immigrants has increased owing to awareness of different value structures and the negligence of transitional groups in cross-cultural studies. Based on these justifications, the study conducts a value analysis on Turks, Germans and Turkish immigrants. While Turkish immigrants converge with Germans on competitiveness, skepticism, and collaboration values, they diverge from both Turks’ and Germans’ values on the basis of favoritism, intuitiveness, modesty, and contentedness. Thus, it is understood that Turkish immigrants have different values from Turks and Germans.
