Niniejszy artykuł opisuje kontekst demograficzny starzenia się społeczeństwa w Australii, reakcję rządu na problem starzenia się społeczeństwa oraz dostępne możliwości w zakresie pozytywnego podejścia do procesu starzenia się i kształcenia ustawicznego. Szczególnym zainteresowaniem cieszy się rozwój tzw. ruchu Uniwersytetu Trzeciego Wieku (U3A) w Australii oraz szeroki zakres wolontariatu osób starszych.

This paper describes the demographic context of ageing in Australia, government responses, and the opportunities available for positive ageing and lifelong learning. Of particular interest is the growth of the University of the Third Age (U3A) movement in Australia, and the extent of older persons’ volunteerism.

The article describes the history of a specific type of the University of the Third Age which was developed in Poland and spread out to other countries in the region. The author describes the genesis of this type of education as well as the criteria which governed changes in educational institutes for seniors. Above all, the article discusses the innovative solutions, education practices, and trends which initiated the post-2000 boom in adult education in Poland. The author summarizes and structures the experience gained while working as the Director of the University of the Third Age at the University of Wroclaw in years 2006–2016, with particular reference to the national and international perspective. Remarks of the reflexive practitioner are compared and contrasted with ultra-local trends and take the form of meta-analysis. The results lead to one fundamental conclusion – in Poland a specific model for the education of seniors was formed. We may describe it as bottom-up, democratic, holistic and flexible.

Resentment has a particular place in the University of the Third Age. Here, the activities of the organization come up against the developing personalities of the elderly and crises of personality, which intensify the phenomenon. Temporary resentment can in unfavourable circumstances escalate into permanent resentment, which is more difficult to alleviate. The task of the manager is to uncover this phenomenon at a relatively early stage, and to take appropriate preventative measures in the form of long-lasting negotiation of tasks and a suitable system of sharing rewards.

The aim of this article is to analyse the literature on the education for the elderly, published in Poland in 2000–2013. Publications were divided into two groups: first – the research and diagnostic group and second – the application group. The literature of the first group clearly prevails over the literature devoted to the practical application of research results. In conclusions, the author compares the intensity of current research to the period before 2000 and formulates suggestions

Celem artykułu jest analiza literatury dotyczącej edukacji osób starszych, która ukazała się w Polsce w latach 2000–2013. Publikacje zostały podzielone na dwie grupy: badawczo-diagnostyczną i aplikacyjną. Widać wyraźną przewagę liczebną literatury z pierwszej grupy nad literaturą poświęconą praktycznemu zastosowaniu wyników prowadzonych badań. W zakończeniu autor porównuje intensywność współcześnie prowadzonych badań z okresem przed 2000 rokiem oraz formułuje postulaty dotyczące przyszłych badań.

Universities of the Third Age (U3A) are educational institutions intended for the elderly in retirement age, the so-called third age. A comparative analysis of the activities of U3As from Malta, Hong Kong and Poland during the COVID-19 pandemic was carried out in three areas: 1. Change of the organization of the U3A during the pandemic. 2. Problems and needs of U3A students during a pandemic. 3. Forms of support for U3A students offered by a given U3A. The analysis showed among others: the need for organizational and didactic flexibility when changing the form of education to remote; boredom, lack of motivation, anxiety are the most acute emotional problems of U3A students, as well as low level of physical fitness; the necessity of continuous education of elderly people in the area of new information technologies, as well as including therapeutic workshops in the program offer to strengthen the wellbeing, and motivation to exercise and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Uniwersytety Trzeciego Wieku (UTW) to instytucje edukacyjne przeznaczone dla osób starszych w wieku poprodukcyjnym tzw. trzecim wieku. Analiza porównawcza działalności UTW z Malty, Hongkongu i Polski podczas pandemii COVID-19 została przeprowadzona w trzech obszarach: 1. Zmiana organizacji UTW podczas pandemii; 2. Problemy i potrzeby słuchaczy UTW podczas pandemii; 3. Formy wsparcia słuchaczy UTW oferowane przez dany UTW. Analiza wykazała m.in.: konieczność elastyczności organizacyjnej i dydaktycznej podczas zmiany trybu edukacji na zdalny, nudę, brak motywacji oraz lęk i niepokój jako najbardziej dotkliwe problemy emocjonalne słuchaczy UTW, a także obniżenie sprawności fizycznej; konieczność ustawicznego kształcenia osób starszych w obszarze nowych technologii komputerowych i informacyjnych, uwzględnienie w ofercie programowej elementów terapeutycznych, a także warsztatów wzmacniających motywację do ćwiczeń fizycznych i zachowania zdrowego trybu życia.

Problem starości jest zagadnieniem atrakcyjnym i interesującym w kontekście starzejącego się społeczeństwa. Coraz więcej pojawia się badań na temat działań seniorów, ich uczestniczenia w różnych projektach, zajęciach, warsztatach na Uniwersytetach Trzeciego Wieku czy w klubach seniorów. Jednakże edukacyjny aspekt starości i starzenia się jest niewystarczająco rozpoznany naukowo. Osoby starzejące się i stare nie są w dalszym ciągu postrzegane jako potencjał edukacyjny. Artykuł porusza aspekt niejednoznacznej granicy starości oraz korzyści uczenia się w późnej dorosłości. Meritum artykułu stanowią rozważania na temat zagadnienia geragogiki krytycznej oraz krytycznej gerontologii edukacyjnej w odniesieniu do działań edukacyjnych proponowanych na wrocławskich Uniwersytetach Trzeciego Wieku.

The problem of old age is an attractive and interesting issue in context of ageing society. There are quite a lot of research done on the field of activity of seniors, theirs participation in different projects and workshops at University of the Third Age or seniors’ clubs. However educational aspect of ageing and old age is not enough recognized on the scientific field. The ageing and old people are not noticeable as the educational potential still. The article reflects on the aspects of moving borders of old age and profits from learning in the old. The core of the article is the issue of critical educational gerontology and critical geragogy with reference to educational activities offered at the Universities of the Third Age in Wroclaw.
