The National Szechenyi Library (NSZL) has developed a program that makes it possible to convert UDC numbers of old catalogue records into subject terms. The outcome of the project will be that records of the retrospective catalogue will become searchable both by UDC numbers and with the thesaurus of the National Szechenyi Library. The conversion is based on the data included in the publicly accessible NSZL thesaurus, supported by the RELEX thesaurus management system. This thesaurus already contains a significant quantity of related data (descriptors and UDC numbers as well as UDC indexes and UDC numbers). The conversion is carried out by the JAVA-based program using these relations. This project proves that the UDC numbers of records in retrospective catalogues can be converted into subject terms automatically, without major intellectual investment.

The paper examines the problem of the computer-based searchability of databases containing both catalogue records and full-text documents. The question arises whether such old and prestigious classification systems as the Universal Decimal Classification should still remain in use in the age of ontologies, machine translation and natural-language context analysis? At the current level of the development of information technologies, the answer is: yes. The next question is, how can good quality controlled and natural-language search tools co-operate in the same search system? The first part of the paper presents the UDC system, as the most popular classification system also used in the countries of Central Europe. The following chapters deal with the differences between free text search solutions and search tools based on classification categories. The application of both types of searches in the same system means a great challenge for librarians. The paper offers one practical solution in the context of the ALEPH 500 integrated library system, a newly created search tool at the National Technical Information Centre and Library (BME OMIKK), operating at Budapest University of Technology and Economics. http://tmt.omikk.bme.hu/print.html?id=5074&issue_id=501

Card catalogues have been replaced by automated catalogues in the library world. The data that earlier figured on card catalogue records, including UDC numbers, together form the database records. The use of UDC can be difficult because in order to determine the meaning of a number, we have to look up its natural language definition in the tables. Synonyms - terms having identical meanings but different forms - need to be related. Homonyms - terms having different meanings but identical form - need to be separated. With the creation of cross references it would be possible to avoid ambiguity in information retrieval languages as well as to keep track of the changes made in UDC numbers.
