The study is devoted to the research of the historiographical discussion, which was provoked by the publication of the German translation of the first volume "History of Ukraine-Russia", authored by Mykhailo Hrushevsky. The study identifies specific features of the debate on the Hrushevsky´s historiographical ideas in the environment of Ukrainian, Polish, German, Czech and Romanian historians. The research shows that among the strengths of Hrushevsky´s scientific work, the reviewers included consistency in the generalization of the source base and historical literature. Western European historians have clearly disagreed with the revision of the so-called Norman theory by Ukrainian scientists, as they questioned their established vision of the past of Eastern Europe and their conclusions substantially shifted the accents of research to the past. They considered the author´s categorical attitude to be inappropriate in defending their own hypotheses without broadening the source base. The German edition of “History of the Ukrainian Nation” by Mykhailo Hrushevsky was an event that attracted attention not only in the environment of Ukrainian but also German historiography.

The authors present the formation and development of the Ukrainian national education system in Slovakia after the World War II, which was determined by its results and new political conditions. The founding of Russian schools in Eastern Slovakia did not correspond to the wishes of part of the Ruthenian population, and their preference was a source of permanent tension. The authors of this article analyse the personnel, material and technical problems related to the development of Ukrainian (Russian) schools as well as the activities of political and state authorities in their solution. The introduction of the Ukrainian language as the language of instruction disrupted the consolidation in this area and increased dissatisfaction in many municipalities. The efforts to persuade people or various administrative obstacles could not prevent the change of the language of instruction from Ukrainian to Slovak.

In December 1873, the Hungarian Ministry of Religion and Education called the Greek Catholic bishops of Mukachevo and Prešov to view their opinion on the possibility of abolishment of the Cyrillic and adoption of Latin alphabet in Hungarian transcription for Ruthenian language. The bishop of Prešov decided to assign the task to canon Aleksandr Roikovych whereas in Mukachevo eparchy a scientific commission prepared the document. The Karpat newspaper edited by Mykola Homichkov in Uzhhorod became a platform for the Greek Catholic priesthood to express their opposition to ministry’s request and call for preservation of the old script. The following contribution aims to analyse the official responses from both eparchies in order to examine the symbolic meaning of Cyrillic alphabet for Ruthenian culture in Carpathian Ruthenia.

The author of the paper examines different lexical units in the Slovak and Ukrainian languages. The basis of her research is provided by a Ukrainian-Slovak dictionary and a Slovak- Ukrainian dictionary in the compilation of which the author participated. Differences between the semantic structures of the two languages with such a close genetic relationship reflect differences in the perception of reality and its evaluation captured by the semantics of lexemes of the compared languages.

The culture of laughter in every nation’s tradition, including Ukrainian, is characterized by its peculiarities. With its folklore roots, the comic of all kinds has been transformed into fiction. Such receptive relations are particularly close between folk oral tradition and the literature in the period of Romanticism. In this article, the authors are the first to analyse the interaction between categories of the comic and the tragic in featured short stories on Cossacks by O. Storozhenko. The research offers an attractive prospect for the further exploration of other O. Storozhenko’s works as well as for comparative studies of works by other authors’ in the indicated period.
