The paper discusses the changes in the living standards of the Kazakh population in the years 1985-2002, with the collapse of the Soviet Union as the turning moment. The analysis has been carried out for such areas as: public health, access to medical services, access to education infrastructure, earning opportunities, dwelling conditions, access to culture. In order to assess the changes in the living conditions of the Kazakhs, statistical information was used along with interviews conducted with the Polish repatriates from Kazakhstan. It was proved that the period of systemic transformation and changes in the economy following the collapse of the USSR led to the deterioration of the situation of the Kazakh population. This however, coincides with the conclusion that since 2000 an increase in the living standards of the population could be observed.
