Freiheit ist erkenntnisgeleitet: Man erkennt ein Gut und kann es anstreben, weil es ein Gut ist, oder nicht anstreben, weil es nur ein Gut ist. Die Wahl zwischen mehreren Gütern ist davon bereits abgeleitet. „In sich schlecht“ kann nur eine Handlung sein, die ohne „entsprechenden Grund“ einen Schaden verursacht oder zulässt. Der Grund einer Handlung ist dann kein „entsprechender“, wenn die Handlung den in ihr angestrebten Wert (ihren „Grund“ auf die Dauer und im Ganzen in Wirklichkeit untergräbt. Dann macht der Schaden ihren gewollten „Gegenstand“ aus. Wenn man vom „Gegen-stand“ einer Handlung die „Absicht“ unterscheidet, handelt es sich in Wirklichkeit um den „Gegen-stand einer zweiten Handlung, zu deren Ermöglichung man die erste Handlung zusätzlich benutzen will. Die „Umstände“ bestimmen nur quantitativ, in welchem Maß eine Handlung gut oder schlecht ist.

Freedom is driven by cognition. One cognizes a good and can aim at it because this is a certain good; or one can reject it because this is a good. Choice among numerous goods is based on that. Actioncan be only evil in itself if it does or allow harm without “appropriate reason.” The reason of an action is then inappropriate when an action/activity – in the long run and in the context of the entirereality – diminishes the value it strives to reach. The damage ensued becomes then “the object” that one craves in action. If “the object” of an action is differentiated from “the reason”, then in essence“the object” of the second action becomes the focal point, which in turn one aims to facilitate through the first action. The surrounding “circumstances” provide only quantitative reference with regard tothe extent in which a particular action is good or evil.

Wolność jest kierowana przez poznanie. Poznaję jakieś dobro i mogę do niego dążyć, bo jest dobrem lub je odrzucić, bo jest tylko jakimś dobrem. Wybór pośród większej liczby dóbr jest już na tym oparty. „Samo w sobie złe” może być tylko takie działanie, które bez „odpowiedniej racji” powoduje szkodę lub na nią przyzwala. Racja działanie nie jest odpowiednia” wtedy, gdy działanie – w dłuższej perspektywie i w kontekście całej rzeczywistości – podkopuje wartość, do której dąży. Szkoda jest wtedy „przedmiotem”, którego się chce w tym działaniu. Jeśli od „przedmiotu” działania odróżnia się „zamiar”, to w rzeczy samej chodzi o „przedmiot” drugiego działania, które chcemy dodatkowo umożliwić pierwszym działaniem. „Okoliczności” określają tyko w sposób ilościowy, w jakiej mierze działanie jest dobre lub złe.
