The purpose of this article is to present the idea of building a large formation of solidarity in the political thought of the Union of Freedom. During this time period 1994–1997 there were ideas aimed at the creation of the center-left, which is the fundamental concept for politicians gathered around the Zofia Kuratowska and former Environment Group of the Liberal and Social Democratic Union. Totally diff erent approached to create a center-right. Sees a need for cooperation and to take programmatic agreement among the parties that arose from the great „Solidarity” in 1980. The creation of this formation was used to power the eff ective removal of the SLD-PSL coalition and the completion of reforms in the country.

Freedom Union, a political formation which was created from the connection of the Democratic Union and the Liberal-Democratic Congress in spring 1994, was accused of being the continuation of DU’s idea and the difference between DU and FU was a regulation in the party’s statute which banned creating political factions. Conflicts among the members of the connected groups took place already during the first convention of the party. It turned out then, that there must be a place for various views on various themes in the party. The members were accused of switching to either left or right side of the political scene, for example through crypto-factions creation — Polish Liberal Group. As a result, party activists put forward a proposal to create Democratic Forum which main aim was to strengthen FU position on the political arena and to unify actions of the union members.

The aim of the article was to present the circumstances of the foundation and activi-ty of the National Offices of The Freedom Union (UW) that comprised an executive and operational level guiding the contemporary work of the abovementioned political party; it was positioned between the Presidium and the Parliamentary Club, and was organiza-tionally and substantively responsible for particular areas. In 1994–1997 the National Offices were a part of UW opposition against the coalition of the Democratic Left Alli-ance (SLD) and The Polish People's Party (PSL) founded in 1993, thanks to which they became a sort of a ‘shadow cabinet’, monitoring and reacting to the current policy of the SLD-PSL government. The activity of those offices contributed to the stimulation and activation of party members, especially at the local level, by, for example, creating a network of regional spokesmen, closely cooperating with expert groups, representatives of local self-governments, associations and trades unions. The second important criterion connected with the activity of the discussed structures was developing a series of programme doc-uments, including resolutions and statements critical of the SLD-PSL coalition.

Celem artykułu było przedstawienie okoliczności powstania i działalności sekre-tariatów krajowych Unii Wolności (UW). W latach 1994–1997 stanowiły one jedno z zagadnień opozycyjności UW wobec zawiązanej w 1993 r. koalicji Sojuszu Lewicy Demokratycznej (SLD) i Polskiego Stronnictwa Ludowego (PSL), dzięki czemu stały się swoistym gabinetem cieni monitorującym oraz reagującym na bieżącą politykę rządu SLD-PSL. Sekretariaty krajowe pracowały z różną intensywnością oraz w zróżnicowanym zakresie. Ich aktywność, przynajmniej w początkowej fazie działania, skierowana była wyłącznie do członków i sympatyków partii, natomiast w miarę rozszerzania porusza-nych problemów, tworzenia nowych zespołów i sekretariatów zapraszano do pracy w nich przedstawicieli kultury, oświaty, samorządów, związków zawodowych czy stowarzyszeń. Działalność sekretariatów przyczyniła się do ożywienia i zaktywizowa-nia członków partii, zwłaszcza na poziomie lokalnym, m.in. poprzez stworzenie sieci rzeczników regionalnych ściśle współpracujących ze środowiskami eksperckimi, przedstawicielami samorządu terytorialnego, stowarzyszeń i związków zawodowych. Drugim ważnym kryterium związanym z działalnością omawianych struktur było wypracowanie szeregu dokumentów programowych, w tym rezolucji i stanowisk, krytycznie odnoszących się do koalicji SLD-PSL.

Despite its long absence from the political scene Freedom Union is still used as a discursive figure constructed to polarize the public debate and party policy and discredit political opponents. The purpose of this paper is to show the genealogy and provide the analysis of the specific strategies of delegitimization using the figure of Freedom Union. These tasks will be achieved through the analysis of specific right wing strategies of building the image of Freedom Union the environment UW and its predecessors: Civic Movement Democratic Action and the Democratic Union.

Unia Wolności, mimo swojej wieloletniej nieobecności na scenie politycznej, nadal wykorzystywana bywa jako dyskursywna figura służąca polaryzacji debaty publicznej i polityki partyjnej oraz dyskredytowaniu oponentów politycznych. Celem niniejszego tekstu jest ukazanie genealogii oraz analiza specyficznych treści budujących strategię delegitymizacji przy użyciu figury Unii Wolności. Zadanie to realizowane będzie poprzez analizę szczegółowych strategii budowania wizerunku środowiska UW i jej poprzedniczek: Ruchu Obywatelskiego Akcji Demokratycznej oraz Unii Demokratycznej podejmowanych przez ugrupowania prawicowe.
