Education of the elderly is unquestionably the most important part of the social policy nowadays. Education has positive influence on the adaptation to the old age and it also raises the quality of pensioners’ lives. It plays a special role in preparing seniors for civilisation changes and modernisation. Without digital competences everyday functioning of seniors is endangered; they may also become lonely and excluded. This article presents the current situation related to the educational activity of seniors. It also includes the analysis of available reports on the digital competences of the elderly and the Third Age Universities. The article is an attempt to answer the question which direction the education of seniors should take.

Edukacja osób starszych jest jednym z ważniejszych zagadnień związanych z aktywnością seniorów w starości. Edukacja spełnia wiele ważnych funkcji, wpływa na przystosowanie się do starości oraz na podniesienie oceny jakości życia. Edukacja odgrywa szczególną rolę w przygotowaniu seniorów do zmian cywilizacyjnych i powszechnej technologizacji wszystkich obszarów życia codziennego. Bez kompetencji cyfrowych codzienne funkcjonowanie seniorów jest trudniejsze, sprzyja też samotności i wykluczeniu. W artykule tym przedstawiono problematykę wykorzystania nowoczesnych technologii przez seniorów oraz edukacji. Przeanalizowano dostępne raporty dotyczące kompetencji cyfrowych seniorów oraz uniwersytetów trzeciego wieku. Artykuł ten jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytanie, w którym kierunku powinna zmierzać edukacja seniorów. Przedstawiono również obecną sytuację związaną z aktywnością edukacyjna osób starszych.
