Pope Damasus was from Spain. His rival was the deacon Ursinus, who was also elected a bishop. Damasus, the successor of Pope Liberius, announced the succession of St. Peter as the basis of the pontificate. Damasus fought Arianism (Homeism) in the Western Church. He sought independence from secular jurisdiction over ecclesiastical communities and over the pope. He built new churches in Rome.

Papież Damazy był z pochodzenia Hiszpanem. Jego rywalem był diakon Ursyn, który został także wybrany na biskupa. Damazy, następca papieża Liberiusza, proklamował jako podstawę swego autorytetu następstwo po św. Piotrze. Damazy zwalczał w Kościele zachodnim arianizm (homeizm). Dążył do uniezależnienia się od sądowej świeckiej jurysdykcji nad wspólnotami kościelnymi i nad papieżem. W Rzymie budował nowe kościoły.
