The subject of the study is a definitional understanding and reflection on the linguistic variables used in the methodology of text analysis. The impetus to write this paper was the definition of the very linguistic entities that text is made out of, and their conceptual and terminological designation from the point of view of the text linguistics. The term variable was chosen for the flexibility of its status and value. Linguistic variables are presented from the perspective of systemic, textual, quantitative and corpus linguistics. Interpretation, which is used in the sense of explanation, is the methodological framework. The definition of the linguistic variables is connected with the operational steps of segmentation, identification and classification. A distinction is made between the linguistic variables with a primarily systemic value, which traditionally show the linguistic (langue) and speech (parole) status, and the linguistic variables with a primarily textual and pragmatic value.

The paper offers a semantic analysis of anaphora using bound variables in two distinct logical systems – predicate calculus and dynamic predicate calculus. First, it offers a general explanation of anaphora. Further, basic relevant notions of both systems are discussed. Finally, the existing models of anaphora are analysed to show their deficiencies.

The paper deals with semantic content of elliptic sentences and its relation to semantic content of the corresponding non-elliptical sentences. On the basis of certain kinds of examples it is shown that syntactic theories of ellipsis have serious limits. It is also demonstrated that the so-called Property Theory, which is an example of a semantic theory of ellipsis, bears serious limitations. Thereafter, another semantic theory, namely Minimal Indexicalism, is analysed. Theoretical tools of the theory – in particular, its criteria of linguistic expressions identity and three layers of content – that are vital to its handling of ellipsis are discussed in some detail. Finally, a new theory of ellipsis based on Transparent Intensional Logic is proposed and argued for.

The paper deals with the word “without” and its role in those kinds of collocations in which it has a meaning-carrying function. It is assumed that the meaning of “without” in the kinds of collocations under scrutiny is context independent in that it can be explicated by a single scheme: For every ξ1, ξ2, …, ξn holds, that Π(ξ1, ξ2, …, ξn) if not Θ(ξ1, ξ2, …, ξn) where Π, Θ are propositions or propositional functions (predicates) and ξ1, ξ2, …, ξn are relevant variables, whose range is determined by that following after the word “without”. The scheme varies with the variable type to which “without” is applied purely as a certain kind of operator. The concatenations “without + expression” are, typically, equivalent to more prolix “without”-free collocations; thus “without” is a suitable device for text comprehension.

The paper deals with the semantics of the word only. Though inspired by Lepore’s analysis, it offers a different explication of the existential import of concatenations only + singular expression. It is assumed that the meaning of only in the kinds of collocations under scrutiny (i.e., connective …if…) is context independent in that it can be explicated by a single scheme No other than ξs are ψs. The scheme varies with the variable type to which only is applied purely as a certain kind of operator. The explication of the role of only, when prefixing …if…, offers a new modality based explanation without invoking the notions of sufficient and necessary condition. The concatenations only + expression are, typically, equivalent to more prolix only-free collocations; thus only is a suitable device for text compression.
