Starting in Wuhan in December 2019, and making its way all the way to Rome and New York in April 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has put the states, alliances and others, square in the face of a serious challenge. However, the question that happens to be a stumbling block this time has never been posed as a problem or obstacle before – the question of public health; a question that has taught the European Union a lesson about what is a top priority and how all the other policies, plans and strategies may seem unimportant overnight. This paper provides an analysis on how the European Union coped with the global threat given its limited legal possibilities, and the unprecedented situation of its Member States becoming the second outbreak point of the pandemic. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic, once again, has opened up the question of solidarity and the coherence within the EU. The conclusions drawn from this research are of great importance as a way to show whether the EU will come out of this situation with a positive outcome, confi rming its values of solidarity and coherence, or whether it will have to undertake drastic reforms in order to consolidate the latter.

One of the roles that school plays is to introduce values that are meaningful and that present a measure for human activity; not only practical values of the cognitive world but also spiritual values, however the Framework Educational Programme for Basic Education is aimed at those values that are “generally accepted by the society”, i. e. pragmatic values. Leading thinkers advert to a crisis of values and claim that spiritual values disappear from the lives of individuals as well from the society. They seek ways to prevent this tendency.

Pedagogical reflection is accompanied from the start by the conviction that upbringing is an art and requires a particular kind of sensitivity, innovativity in action and creative engagement. Upbringing today is upbringing in a society that is diverse, wavering, full of tension, and in which there are many opportunities for choice, great personal responsibility, with life chances, but also with many dangers. This is why an authentic upbringing requires, above all, a closeness and trust which brings love, a first and fundamental experience which is, or at least which ought to be, the love of a child by its parents. The upbringer, thus, stands in a relationship to the upbringee as with a person, and not a material which may be freely formed. The upbringing itself is aiming towards the future positive development of the child such that s/he will be able to realize his/her “potential”, shape his/her will and develop as an “inimitable person” both in the individual and social senses. The “realisation of the individual” which takes place during upbringing leaves space for hope. In the promise and hope the future interacts with the human life even now, and by the same token shows the sense behind upbringing. Whereas, from the perspective of “Christian realism”, it is emphasised that the individual always finds finds him or herself in a certain “existential situation”. And so upbringing is not merely a dialogue and a relationship between people, but it is also a real relationship with God. It is God who comes to meet the individual in history and who gives him the unfailing promise of total fulfilment (joy, a sense of life). In this view the sign of hope is also the building of a future (a community) through respecting the natural laws and fundamental freedoms of people and nations.

In this paper the authors present the issue of the significance of values in the operations of members of detached policegroups. Members of such groups usually operate in contexts referenced to the situations threatening core values, where thereis a conflict between being secure and having a lack of security during the operations of the unit. The two states mentioned abovedeserve special consideration when discussing issues understood as components of the first pillar of a safety culture. The authorsput research questions concerning possible links between values and other variables highlighted in the research, their dependenciesand level. The values reported and thoroughly researched in the Schwartz scale are an excellent instrument for describingand explaining human behaviour in situations of making choices and accepting challenges. The usefulness of this instrumentwas confirmed in this study which obtained interesting research results on the relationship between values and identifiabledemographic variables in the studied group. The authors of the project believe that the issue of values operationalised in the tasksis a useful tool for the interpretation of the behaviour of officers who are members of detached groups. Situations where individualand public security is threatened are usually included in the specificity of the contexts in which uniformed services and securitystaff operate. When conceptualising the issue of attitudes and values it is necessary to undertake research of an internationalcharacter. Research in other cultural conditions allows account to be taken of both the specificity of the mechanisms of creationand the functioning of the system of values, as well as confirmation of their universality. It also seems advisable to focus ona conceptualisation aimed at ordering the understanding and interpretation of key concepts in the field of values. This can begreatly facilitated by the use of methods for the study of personality already employed in subsequent studies carried out by ourresearch team.

In this paper I want to look at the Holocaust story as an example of a value-laden story which might become one of the foundation stones of the emergent global ethics, indispensable for bridging ideological divides that so often prevent a global society from living in peace and solidarity. My key suggestion will be that the stories that have the potential of becoming truly “global stories,” will in reality become carriers of global values only after undergoing interpretative transformation which will enable all citizens of the global village to identify with ethically positive aspects of the story, so that they will perceive this story as their own.

The goal of the present contribution is an unconventional one. It concerns not only a punctual problem - the axiology of ethnical values - assumed on the “vertical” of a single discipline, as it is usually done, but a complex of “horizontal” problems unified by an integrative methodology: that of semiotics. The great quantity of the problems involved obliged us − on a limited frame − to present them intuitively, to formulate only some hypotheses and models, for a preliminary holistic knowledge.

The Department of Political Science of the Alexander Dubček University in Trenčin during 2018 - 2020 aims to solve the project of the Cultural and Educational Grant Agency of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sports of the Slovak Republic (known as KEGA project). The KEGA Project The Innovation of Methodical Sheets for Teachers of Civics from the need of Prevention of Extremism and Education for Democratic Citizenship is focused on the analysis of the phenomenon of extremism and the other forms of intolerance towards other members of society in terms of several social sciences (political science, international relations, history, sociology, massmedia studies) with the intention to innovate methodical sheets for civics education teachers. In the final phase of project a synthesis of these views will take place to make curriculums easier to use for teachers within civic education courses and at the same time, to strengthen the acute need to prevent angry demonstrations. This synthesis should create more effective upbringing and education towards democratic citizenship. The aim of the project is to analyze selected aspects related to issues of extremism in theory, the synthesis of which contributes to problem solving, resulting in new methodical sheets in an online available format. The acquired knowledge will be available to the professional public, especially to primary and secondary school teachers in the Slovak Republic, in the framework of workshops, thematic lectures and summer schools.

As the most obvious provision of social media in the individual world, „selfie“ is confronted at a point where self-confidence is increased or lost. Nowadays, the use of social media starts at a very early age, and self-efficacy beliefs are also developing at an early age. However, the madness of selfie is becoming more of an „infantilized“ action. Thus, it can be argued that it functions as a counterfeit of the self and serves as a mirror in the individual’s world. It is also true that this „new or pseudo mirror“, which shows us both to ourselves and to others, also raises concerns about perceptual development, curiosity and visibility in the era of selfdiscovery throughout the developmental process. The concept of self-reflection and „selfie“ in its social media term emerges at a point where the individual’s internal communication is broken. It brings a „dual-dyadic“ concept on one hand and a „triad theory“ on the other. The study aims to analyze „selfie“ madness in social media, providing examples and assumptions within the framework of these theoretical discussions. The study aims to add new dimensions to the concept of self portrayals of individuals within national and international examples in the light of current media scrutiny.

Values―the individual’s or group’s general tastes regarding results or courses of actions deemed appropriate or otherwise, have a synergetic relationship with educational growth. Ordinarily, the values espoused by individuals or groups engender specific types of attitudes that elicit precise sorts of behaviours that open the horizon for definite sorts of educational growth. Conversely, the quality and quantity of educational growth of a nation influence the behaviours of the citizens which generate attitudes that ultimately create values. This rectangular-like bidirectional correlation has a very strong causational angle to it: right values lead to positive educational growth; wrong ones elicit growth deficits in education, and vice versa. This essay establishes the correlation between values and educational growth using Nigeria as a case study. Through textual criticisms, it highlights the causative influence of bad values on the poor educational outcomes in the country and recommends value reorientation to reverse the ugly tide.

The aim of this article is to present youth subcultures, which still have not been analyzed deep enough by social scientists. While new types of subcultures are forming around the world, ‘classic’ subcultures are still very interesting. This article presents norms and values of three youth subcultures in the changing modern world. They were called symbolic subcultures (T. Paleczny, 1997). This article is based on 21 in-depth interviews done in 2009 with members of three subcultures - Skinheads, Punks and Metalheads. Skinheads and Punks were chosen to this analysis because they seems to be opponents in their values. Metalheads in literature are described as those without any specific value. However this research did not confirm this fact. This article shows what are the most important things in subcultures' members' lifes and what kind of rules dominate their social world.

The process of socialization of the man takes place in new conditions. Social transformation is the result of social compromises. The article focuses on the axiological aspects of consciousness under conditions of the development of contemporary media culture and e-culture. Relying on theories of mediaphilosophy the author considers the media as a main factor of the determination of human value in the information society. The research is aimed at eliciting the peculiarities of modern media culture in the context of an existential and axiological approach that enables the determination of the effect the development of the mediasphere in modern culture has on the world of human values. In this case, media (mediasphere) is understood in its broad sense as a sphere of electronic communication with diverse forms of appearance and electronic mass media, generating the global information space. The author suggests the analysis of the penetration of communication e-culture (and its forms) and media-culture. The author argues that the values of media-culture (freedom, personality orientation, pragmatism, and other) developed under the conditions of information and ethic pluralism, which give a person more responsibility of spiritual choice.

Axiocentric teaching and learning about media is one of the ways of media teaching and learning that emphasizes the values and evaluation process in relation to the media and its products (Kačinová, 2015). The focus of the educational process is on the formation of personality through the media. It also pays attention to the value orientations and value systems of individuals in the context of media presentations and to those developed under the influence of the media or during interaction with it. At the same time, this kind of media teaching and learning cultivates the critical thinking of pupils in the interaction with the value representations promoted by the media, thus revealing the intentions of media content creators in this area. This kind of media learning leads directly to the essence of media education being perceived as an educational topic in the content of school education. The main aim of our study is to provide a theoretical background to this topic and present the results of empirical research which focused on an analysis of case studies of school practice, observation of teaching and interviews with teachers, through which we demonstrate ways of implementing axiocentric teaching and learning about media in selected Slovak schools. At the end of the paper, we clarify the importance of the educational process for the development of the individual in their interaction with the media.

The authors deal with the issue of transformations and the establishment of news journalism genres in the online media environment, with a focus on extended multimedia news reports. They emphasise that the technical and technological platform of online media creates fertile ground for the modification of genres sourced from conventional media. According to them, the multi-platform essence of online media and the hybridisation trend in genre-based approaches are a suitable foundation for the formation of extended multi-platform news. They raise the question of whether it is possible at the end of the second decade of the new millennium to formulate a premise under which an extended multimedia news report has specific typological characteristics and established creative procedures. They reach a clear conclusion based on qualitative analysis completed on a selection of extended multimedia news reports from the portals sme.sk and pravda.sk. They state that it is appropriate to talk about a stable structure as well as established procedures in the creation of extended multimedia news reports.

This article relates to the attempt of finding the common framework for the complex relation: culture – economy. The article consists of two main parts entitled: “From the perspective of ‘strangeness’ of culture and economy” and “In search of common platform for culture and economy”. The first part includes the concept of individuality presented by Friedrich Hayek. His view on two kinds of individualism presented in philosophical thought, so called “right” and “false”, in the opinion of author of article, can help to weaken the sharp opposition between individual and social context. The author points on collision in system of values between traditional local habits and contemporary market rules. The second part of the text provides for tangent lines between culture and economy. She appreciates methods of ethnology (tool box) useful in empirical exploration of mutual relations between man and his activity.
