Perykopa J 19,25−27, nazywana często testamentem z krzyża, nie zawiera jedynie ostatniej dyspozycji Syna dotyczącej dalszych losów Jego Matki. W godzinie śmierci Jezusa Maryja zostaje ogłoszona Matką Kościoła, czyli Matką wszystkich wierzących, których pod krzyżem uobecnia umiłowany uczeń Jezusa. Taka interpretacja nie pozbawia tej sceny elementów cierpienia i boleści Maryi, lecz zwraca uwagę na jej jeszcze głębszy sens mesjański i eklezjalny.

The pericope J 19,25–27, often called the testament from the cross, does not contain only the last commandment of the Son on future life of his Mother. In the hour of Jesus’s death Mary has been pronounced the Mother of the Church, which means Mother of all believers, who under the cross are embodied by the believed disciple of Jesus. Such an interpretation does not deprive the scene of some elements of Mary’s pain and grief, but rather points at even deeper Messianic and ecclesiastical sense.
