The crowd-sourcing approach should be implemented into a new historical geoportal of Poland due to its increasing potential in WebGIS. Registered users will be able to acquire spatial data from various map series. As it requires feature class harmonization, a common symbol classification should be proposed. It will be based on chosen topographic maps of Polish land from the 19th and 20th centuries. Feature classes derived from archival maps will be standardized and reclassified, but with no information lost. This will be done in four steps which require: data acquisition, map content harmonization, feature class typification and attribute table elaboration. In addition, four methods of data harmonization can be distinguished: symbol sequence, semantic analogies, spatial relations and a combined method. The paper covers the elaboration of two thematic layers - roads and railways based on three topographic maps (Austrian 1:75 000, German 1:100 000, Russian 1: 126 000).

Due to the need for further expansion of a gas pipeline network and more efficient maintenance of available spatial data on the gas pipeline infrastructure, the management of gas transportation system operator has decided to extend the existing information system for the management of gas infrastructure by introducing location intelligence, i.e. its upgrading with the functional WebGIS solution. This paper describes the approach for developing the solution by using open source software components. The implemented WebGIS solution enables environmental monitoring in relation to safe natural gas transport, helps in planning and maintaining the gas pipeline network, and provides location-conscious decisionmaking on various aspects of the gas infrastructure management. The aim of this paper is to present an international and multidisciplinary project entitled Digitising Patterns of Power (later referred to as DPP), which is funded by the programme Digital Humanities: Langzeitprojekte zum kulturellen Erbe of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The project is hosted by the Institute for Medieval Research of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (its implementation period is 2015–2018). DPP is intended to compare four regions: the Carolingian Eastern Alps (8th–9th c.), the March / Morava–Thaya / Dyje Borderregion (7th–11th c.), the historical region of Macedonia (12th–14th c.), and historical Southern Armenia (5th–11th c.). The team concentrates on aspects such as: the depiction and analysis of space and location in medieval written sources, the interaction between developed and natural environment, the usage of space, and the emergence of new political, religious and economic structures of power. DPP is implemented within the framework of the programme Digital Humanities: Langzeitprojekte zum kulturellen Erbe of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. We are certain that the outcome of the project will render interesting results and insights, not only for the researchers focusing on the four aforesaid regions, but also for all those who seek new methods for investigating the past of our continen
