Zbigniew Osiński studied Polish philology first as an undergraduate and then graduate student at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (1957–1966). Then he worked at the University as an assistant professor, and later as associate professor (since 1970). It was in Poznań that he first encountered the theatre of Jerzy Grotowski, who became one of the most important subjects of his research. His first book, Teatr Dionizosa (‘The Theatre of Dionysius,’ 1972), explored the Romantic contexts in contemporary Polish theatre. Since 1970 Osiński worked at the University of Warsaw. His habilitation thesis, published as Grotowski i jego Laboratorium (‘Grotowski and his Laboratory,’ 1980), has become a major scholarly contribution and trove of information about Jerzy Grotowski’s theatrical activity. In 1991 Zbigniew Osiński was appointed University of Warsaw Professor, and he received his full professorship in 2000. In 1989 Zbigniew Osiński devised and founded the Ośrodek Badań Twórczości Jerzego Grotowskiego i Poszukiwań Teatralno-Kulturowych (the Centre for the Study of Jerzy Grotowski’s Work and Theatrical and Cultural Explorations) in Wrocław, which he ran until 2004. It later transformed into the Jerzy Grotowski Institute. My recollections of Zbigniew Osiński include his research fascinations: his participation in actions of the Laboratory Theatre and Expeditions of the Gardzienice Centre for Theatre Research. He was the author of more than a dozen books that have become substantial contributions to Polish theatre studies on Jerzy Grotowski, the Reduta Theatre, Oriental motifs in Polish culture, and Irena and Tadeusz Byrskis. He also edited the texts and writings of Jerzy Grotowski, Mieczysław Limanowski, Juliusz Osterwa, and Wacław Radulski.

Zbigniew Osiński w 1991 roku został mianowany profesorem UW, a w 2000 roku otrzymał tytuł profesora zwyczajnego. W 1989 roku opracował koncepcję i stał się dyrektorem Ośrodka Badań Twórczości Jerzego Grotowskiego i Poszukiwań Teatralno-Kulturowych we Wrocławiu, którym kierował do 2004 roku (później Ośrodek zostanie przekształcony w Instytut im. Jerzego Grotowskiego). Był autorem kilkunastu bardzo ważnych dla polskiej teatrologii książek, poświęconych m. in. Jerzemu Grotowskiemu, Teatrowi Reduta, Orientowi w kulturze polskiej, Irenie i Tadeuszowi Byrskim. Był także edytorem tekstów i pism, m.in. Jerzego Grotowskiego, Mieczysława Limanowskiego, Juliusza Osterwy, Wacława Radulskiego. We wspomnieniu – obok przywołania naukowego dorobku Zbigniewa Osińskiego – ukazane zostały też jego fascynacje badawcze: udział w działaniach parateatralnych Teatru Laboratorium i Wyprawach Ośrodka Badań Teatralnych Gardzienice.

Dwa listy Zbigniewa Raszewskiego

I encountered for the first time a cult-like reverence surrounding Zbigniew Raszewski while I studied Polish philology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Such air was exuded especially by some of his colleagues, Jarosław Maciejewski in particular. Krystyna Skuszanka, also a graduate of the Polish philology in Poznań and a participant of the Master’s degree seminar taught by Professor Zygmunt Szweykowski, was part of that circle of followers as well. These people appeared among authors of articles in Pamiętnik Teatralny and contributed their papers to a 630-page-long jubilee book, Prace o literaturze i teatrze ofiarowane Zygmuntowi Szweykowskiemu (‘Papers on Literature and Theatre Offered Up to Zygmunt Szweykowski’, Wydawnictwo Zakładu Narodowego imienia Ossolińskich: Wrocław, 1966). The Table of Content starts with a portrait of the celebrated professor written by Raszewski and ends with my article Dramaty Jana Kasprowicza na scenach polskich (‘Jan Kasprowicz’s Dramas on Polish Stages’). I first met Doctor Raszewski personally in Opole on 15 March 1963. Right after a performance of Akropolis according to Wyspiański put on by Jerzy Grotowski and Józef Szajna at the house of the Laboratorium 13 Rzędów Theatre there was a meeting in a post-German flat, part of which was leased by Eugenio Barba, where an extended team of Pamiętnik Teatralny met. I am publishing here two letters Raszewski wrote to me. The first one is a reply I received after I submitted the manuscript of Kronika życia i twórczości Mieczysława Limanowskiego (‘A Chronicle of Mieczysław Limanowski’s Life and Creative Work’), and the other is Raszewski’s reply to an invitation to the newly-founded Centre for Study of Jerzy Grotowski’s Work and of Cultural and Theatrical Research in Wrocław where, on 14 July 1990, a public meeting with Irena Byrska was to be held, accompanied by a pre-premiere screening of the film Racja teatru. Spotkanie z Ireną Byrską (‘Theatre’s Rationale. A Meeting with Irena Byrska’) directed by Krzysztof Domagalik. Both these letters tell a lot about Raszewski as an editor, about his way of collaborating with authors (in this case, me), and about his expectations and requirements.

The article is a record of a seminar meeting devoted to the memory of professor Zbigniew Osiński, an outstanding theatrologist, first director of the Grotowski Institute in Wrocław, a scholar interested in the works of Juliusz Osterwa, Jerzy Grotowski, Gardzienice Theater and Tadeusz and Irena Byrski’s theatre; researcher of the Oriental theatre reception in Poland. The seminar was organized to commemorate the first death anniversary of the Professor whose scientific path began to take shape in Poznań where he worked until 1970. The record of the meeting reflects its course: in the first part, three short speeches were given: – Professor Dobrochna Ratajczakowa talks about the beginnings of Zbigniew Osiński’s career as a researcher, Professor Elżbieta Kalemba-Kasprzak – about the ‘practice of humanities’ in a specific Poznań way, and professor Ryszard K. Przybylski – about the famous article that used information theory tools written by Balcerzan and Osiński. The second part is devoted to the memories of and reflections on the artistic and scientific activity of Professor Osiński in Poznań. Among the guests of the seminar were Professor Edward Balcerzan, Lech Raczak, Piotr Frydryszek, Janina Karasińska – friends and co-workers of Professor Osiński.
