Reaching a well-adjusted population distribution is a major challenge for urban settlements. Various research works have been focusing on evaluating the demographic balance of urban systems worldwide. Regularities in population distribution among urban settlements have been noticed and confirmed by empirical studies in the contemporary era. These studies assert that both rank of a city in the demographic hierarchy and its population size are proportionally correlated in a balanced urban system. It has been proved that this correlation is established according to mathematical theories that have been scientifically identified and proved through in-depth research. This article aims to check the conformity of the population distribution of the Makkah Province to two main demographic, organisational theories. In this article, there will be an attempt to measure the variations, evaluate and assess the deviations, interpret the result thereof, and then compare the outcomes of the two methods applied on the Makkah Province.

Kolonizacja i napływ ludności do brazylijskiej Amazonii zmieniły jej tradycyjną strukturę osadniczą. W 1950 r. ponad 2/3 ludności miejskiej zamieszkiwało w dwóch głównych miastach – Belém i Manaus. W kolejnych dekadach, wraz z rozwojem nowych ośrodków powstających w kolonizowanych częściach Amazonii, wytworzyła sie bardziej regularna siec miejska.

The aim of this paper is to determine the pace and regional diversification of the urbanization process in the Brazilian Amazon and to trace the changes in the urban settlement network in this area in the years 1950–2010. The studied area includes currently seven states forming the North Region (Região Norte)nwith an area of over 3.8 million km2 , accounting for 45.3% of the country’s area. In the analyzed period, this region was characterized by both the fastest population growth rate and an increase in urban population in Brazil. This resulted in accelerated urbanization processes and the development of urban network in the analysed area. Colonization and the influx of population into the Brazilian Amazon changed its traditional settlement structure. In 1950, more than two thirds of the city population lived in two major cities: Belém and Manaus. In the following decades, with the development of new centers in the colonized parts of the Amazon, a more regular urban network has developed.
