Violence against disabled people has recently been recognised as an important, albeit neglected research topic. Drawing attention to violence motivated by anti-disability bias, this article offers an introduction to research on disablist hate crime. First, it presents a conceptualisation of hate crime and explains such concepts as disablism and ableism. Second, it discusses the concept of disability/disablist hate crime and analyses four areas that reflect the multifaceted nature of disability hate crime research and the social applications of the concept, ranging from conceptual issues to empirical findings, to political implications. These issues are: (1) vulnerability (a strongly criticised belief that people with disabilities are susceptible to victimisation because of 'their' disabilities); (2) invisibility (the under-representation of disablist violence in police statistics); (3) risk (individual and social factors that produce situational vulnerabilities to disablist hate crime); and (4) intervention (measures suggested to prevent disablist hate crime, including the hate crime legislation). Possible future directions of research are outlined in the conclusion.

The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the infrahumanisation phenomenon of Otherness in the context of ableism. In the discussion, a reference is made to the concept of infrahumanisation, explaining what its essence and characteristic features are; ableism which is the discrimination form directed towards people with disabilities, attitudes (considering their three-dimensionality) and five forms of discrimination proposed by Stanislaw Kowalik’s classification. Both attitudes and individual forms of discrimination have been examined through the prism of infrahumanisation showing its close relationship and the prevailing relations between these issues.

Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na zjawisko infrahumanizacji obcych w kontekście ableismu. W rozważaniach odniesiono się do samego pojęcia infrahumanizacji, jaka jest jego istota i czym się charakteryzuje; ableismu, czyli formy dyskryminacji osób niepełnosprawnych, postaw (rozpatrując ich trójwymiarowość) oraz form dyskryminacji zgodnie z zaproponowaną przez Stanisława Kowalika klasyfikacją pięciu form dyskryminacji. Zarówno postawy, jak i poszczególne formy zostały rozpatrzone przez pryzmat infrahumanizacji, pokazując jej ścisły związek oraz zachodzące między tymi zagadnieniami relacje.

This article is a contextual discussion of Sunaura Taylor’s pioneering book Beasts of Burden: Animal and Disability Liberation, dedicated to a parallel critique of anthropocentrism and ableism as two interlocking systems of oppression that propel each other. The review notes the prospects for a (critical) use of the American scholar’s thesis in literary studies, and points out examples of specific works deserving reinterpretation within such a framework.

Artykuł stanowi kontekstowe omówienie pionierskiej książki Sunaury Taylor Bydlęce brzemię. Wyzwolenie ludzi z niepełnosprawnościami i zwierząt, poświęconej paralel- nej krytyce antropocentryzmu i ableizmu jako dwu zazębiających i wspierających się systemów opresji. W recenzji zwrócono uwagę na perspektywy (krytycznego) wykorzystania tez amerykańskiej badaczki w studiach literaturoznawczych, wskazane zostały przykłady konkretnych utworów, zasługujących na reinterpretacje w tak zakreślonych ramach.
