This is the second article of the cycle of portraits of the members of the Editorial Board and Editorial Advisory Board of the journal Physical Culture and Sport. Studies and Research, who are eminent social scientists researching the issue of sport. Among them, there are many world-class professors, rectors and deans of excellent universities, founders, presidents and secretaries-general of continental and international scientific societies and editors of high-scoring journals related to social sciences focusing on sport. The journal Physical Culture and Sport. Studies and Research started its activities in 2008 and gathered many readers, distinguished authors and outstanding reviewers. It is worth taking a moment to present the profiles of the individual editors, thanks to whom the journal keeps getting better and better. The journal is increasingly appreciated internationally particular among the scientists from the humanist and social areas of investigations. The rapidly increasing number of its readers and its surprisingly wide reception, indicated by the number of visits and downloads in English-speaking countries, including hundreds of universities (up to 791 were interested in the content of issue 62 of our magazine), research institutes and related libraries, as well as academics, researchers and students, should be celebrated. These data are derived only from one bibliographic data base (EBSCO). It must be noted that the journal is indexed in 43 bases.

Psychosocial Determinants of the Need for Cognition in Individuals with High Academic Achievements

The aim of the research was to verify what factors determine the level of the need for cognition (NFC) in students and doctoral students with high academic achievements. The project involved 207 participants: 102 individuals with high achievements and 105 without great scientific successes. The following tools were used: the Questionnaire of the Need for Cognition (in Polish adaptation), the Formal Characteristics of Behavior – Temperament Questionnaire Revised Version, the Popular Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire and the Questionnaire of Retrospectively Perceived Parental Attitudes. Research results indicate that in people with high academic achievement, emotional intelligence, activity and perceived mother’s inconsistency positively influence the need for cognition. In the comparison group, emotional intelligence is a positive predictor of NFC and the perceived attitude of father’s inconsistency is a negative predictor of NFC.

Artykuł ten jest próbą przedstawienia sylwetki wybitnego polskiego historyka architektury prof. Zygmunta Świechowskiego, który zmarł 28 grudnia 2015 r. w wieku 95 lat. Zasadnicza część tekstu to omówienie zawodowego życiorysu Profesora, związanego z wieloma środowiskami naukowymi w Polsce i za granicą. Dodatkowym nurtem rozważań są osobiste spostrzeżenia autorki, której pierwsze kontakty z Profesorem sięgają już lat 80. ubiegłego stulecia. Zacieśnienie współpracy nastąpiło od roku 2003, gdy autorka wraz z prof. Świechowskim i prof. Robertem Kunklem rozpoczęła realizację projektu badawczego dotyczącego średniowiecznej architektury cysterskiej w Małopolsce. Konkluzją rozważań jest stwierdzenie, że wszyscy, którzy mieli jakikolwiek kontakt z Profesorem, będą go wspominać jako wybitnego uczonego i wielkiego humanistę.

This article is an attempt at presenting the distinguished Polish architectural historian – Professor Zygmunt Świechowski who passed away on December 28, 2015 at the age of 95. The major part of the text regards Professor’s professional career connected with a lot of circles of scholars in Poland and abroad. Additionally, the article presents the personal observations of the author who first met Professor in the 1980s. They worked closer since 2003 when together with Professor Świechowski and Professor Robert Kunkel they started the research project regarding the medieval Cistercian architecture in Małopolska. The conclusion of those deliberations is the statement that all those who knew Professor will remember him as an eminent scholar and a great humanist.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the relation between media activity of university students and the quality of their participation in academic offer. The huge potential of media is noticed in field of education and how human relations are shaped. At the same time, they are criticized due to their content. In one of the irst places critics refer to the submission of media to popular culture and entertain-ment, promoting of immaturity of the recipients and in consequences withdrawn of adolescents from the public sphere and weakens their engagement into “work ethos”. To what extent are those observations empirically confirmed? I shall discuss this issue on the example of results of research among university students.

Celem tekstu jest analiza wzajemnych relacji między natężeniem oraz stylami aktywności medialnej młodzieży akademickiej a jej uczestnictwem w zaję-ciach na uczelni oraz poziomem osiągnięć akademickich. Dostrzega się potencjał mediów w edukacji i kształtowaniu relacji międzyludzkich; jednocześnie poddaje się krytyce treść ich przekazu. Jednym z przedmiotów krytyki jest podporządkowa-nie mediów kulturze popularnej i rozrywce, promowanie infantylizmu odbiorców (zwłaszcza młodzieży), a w konsekwencji ich wycofywanie ze sfery publicznej oraz osłabianie „etosu pracy”. Czy obserwacje te znajdują potwierdzenie empiryczne? Kwestię analizuję w oparciu o wyniki badań studentów UAM.

Janusz Czarnek jest znanym i cenionym specjalistą w dziedzinie ekonomii i inwestycji. Jego dorobek naukowy obejmuje wiele pozycji książkowych, podręcznikowych, tekstów i analiz publikowanych w czasopismach branżowych i uniwersyteckich w kraju i za granicą. Janusz Czarnek za działalność naukowo-badawczą i dydaktyczną wyróżniony został licznymi nagrodami, w tym dwukrotnie nagrodą Ministra Nauki, Szkolnictwa Wyższego i Techniki.

It is an informative article aimed at presenting the life of deceased doctor docent Janusz Czarnek, who lived in the years 1925-2015. He started his academic and didactic career by lecturing at Warsaw University of Technology, and since 1976 at Nicolaus Copernicus University at the Faculty of Economic Sciences. Janusz Czarnek is a renowned specialist in the area of economics and investment. His academic achievements include many books, textbooks and analyses published in professional and academic journals, both foreign and Polish. For his academic research and didactic activities Janusz Czarnek was awarded numerous prizes, including the Prize of Minister of Science, High Education and Technology, which he received twice.

Aksjologia pedagogiczna to subdyscyplina pedagogiki, która powstała na skrzyżowaniu dwóch dyscyplin naukowych – pedagogiki ogólnej i aksjologii. W kompendiach wiedzy i w literaturze przedmiotu niejednokrotnie bywa pomijana. Dotychczasowy dorobek naukowy aksjologii pedagogicznej jest bogaty. Wymaga on krytycznego uporządkowania i motywuje do dalszego rozwoju subdyscypliny w aspekcie poznawczym, metodologicznym, empirycznym oraz w sferze praktycznej.

Pedagogical axiology is a subdiscipline of pedagogy, that arose in the middle of two scientific disciplines – general education and axiology. In many compendiums of knowledge and literaturę of subject pedagogical axiology is repeatedly ignored. The past academic achievements of pedagogical axiology are rich. It requires critical ordering and motivates the further development of this subdiscipline in cognitive, methodological, empirical, and practical aspects.

The article discusses the issue of intellectual and personality factors affecting school performance and exam results. Arguments for the claim that cognitive abilities condition academic achievements were analyzed. In result it was concluded that intelligence constitute a kind of potential which significance depends on education level – stronger relations are observed in case of early stages of education. At the higher ones more significant is not the level of general intelligence but particular kind of intellectual abilities and their relevance to the exam task. Moreover analysis demonstrated that realization of intellectual potential is not given as such but depends on work and persistence determined by personality factors such as conscientiousness included in the so-called Big Five model.

W artykule omówiono zagadnienie intelektualnych i osobowościowych uwarunkowań sukcesów szkolnych i wyników egzaminacyjnych. Analizie poddano argumenty na rzecz tezy, że zdolności poznawcze warunkują osiągnięcia szkolne. W efekcie podjętych rozważań sformułowano wniosek, że inteligencja stanowi potencjał, którego znaczenie zależy od etapu edukacyjnego – mocniej koreluje z osiągnięciami szkolnymi we wczesnych etapach kształcenia. Na wyższych poziomach edukacji istotniejszy jest nie sam poziom inteligencji ogólnej, lecz specyficzne zdolności poznawcze i ich dopasowanie do wymagań zadania. Co więcej, realizacja potencjału poznawczego w postaci wysokich wyników akademickich nie jest dana sama z siebie oraz wymaga pracy i wytrwałości. Zależy więc od czynników osobowościowych, w tym przede wszystkim od sumienności uwzględnionej w modelu tzw. Wielkiej Piątki.

The subject of the analysis are academic achievements of E. Anna Wesołowska (1929-2016). The article adopts a chronological and problem-oriented approach. After the initial identification of the main academic disciplines, to which we can assign E. Anna Wesołowska's ideas, the development of andragogical, didactic and comparative thought is analysed, maintaining the chronological order and illustrating how the disciplines of her professional development and academic work combined, complemented each other and expanded their boundaries. Academic achievements of E.A. Wesołowska cannot be limited to clear-cut definitions of academic disciplines as they were born in the spirit of general humanistic reflection, of concern of human being, society and the world.

A study on the trends and factors that change the spacial structure of services is the latest current of Professor Jerzy Dzieciuchowicz. However, in recent years, he dedicated the most of his attention to it. It is essential to say that he included the whole service sector in his research, together with market services, non-market services as well as services for producers and businesses. At the same time, he made several typologies and set the tendencies for changes. In his works, Jerzy Dzieciuchowicz also drew attention to the new phenomena related to the services. He emphasized the role of large-format trade and showed the way it should be explored.

Studia nad kierunkami oraz czynnikami przemian struktury przestrzennej usług są najmłodszym nurtem badawczym profesora Jerzego Dzieciuchowicza, jednak w ostatnich latach to im poświęcił on najwięcej uwagi. Istotnym jest fakt, iż Profesor objął swoimi badaniami cały sektor usługowy, w tym usługi rynkowe, usługi nierynkowe oraz usługi dla producentów i biznesu. Dokonał przy tym kilku typologii oraz wyznaczył tendencje przemian. W swoich pracach Jerzy Dzieciuchowicz zwracał również uwagę na nowe zjawiska związane z usługami. Wyeksponował także rolę handlu wielkopowierzchniowego oraz ukazał sposób, w jaki należy go badać.
