Thanks to the unswerving dedication of a small, but enthusiastic group of people, today the Review of International American Studies is indexed in the prestigious Elsevier Scopus database and features in the European Reference Index for the Humanities and Social Sciences (ERIH+); it has its own profile in the Index Copernicus Journal Master List with the Index Copernicus Value (ICV) for 2017 of 77.29 (per 100!). But there is more: recently the RIAS received an “A” class category in the parametric evaluation of the Italian Ministry of Science and was granted as many as 20 parametric points in the most recent evaluation of the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Our distribution flourishes as well: electronic copies of our journal (both full issues and individual articles) are now available to the readers in hundreds of libraries world-wide via the Central and Eastern European Online Library, an important German content and metadata aggregator run by Wolfgang and Bea Klotz and operating from Frankfurt am Main. Likewise, owing to the steadfast loyalty of Beata Klyta, the indefatigable director of the University of Silesia Press and a major champion of our cause, the RIAS is now available in such renowned repositories as CEJSH, BAZHUM or POLINDEX, which institutions render our texts visible to the reading public world-wide.

Prace Monograficzne Uniwersytetu Pedagogicznego im. KEN w Krakowie publikowane są od 1963 roku. Periodyk szybko stał się, obok “Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis”, jednym z najważniejszych wydawnictw Uniwersytetu Pedagogicznego w Krakowie. Artykuł prezentuje charakterystykę Prac Monograficznych, w tym wielkość, treść, opis dodatkowych numerów, układ strony i projekt graficzny. Głównym celem Prac Monograficznych jest prezentacja prac naukowych z różnych dziedzin, napisanych przez polskich autorów, przede wszystkim z Uniwersytetu Pedagogicznego w Krakowie, ale także przez autorów z innych ośrodków badawczych.

The Scientific Monographs of the Pedagogical University of Cracow have been published since 1963. The periodical quickly became, besides “Annales Universitatis Paedagogicae Cracoviensis”, the second most important journal of the Pedagogical University of Cracow. The article presents the characteristics of The Scientific Monographs, including size, content, description of the additional numbers, page layout and graphic design. The main objective of The Scientific Monographs is to present scientific work from diverse fields, written mainly by Polish authors from the Pedagogical University of Cracow, but also by authors from other research centers.

The aim of the article is to present academic book as a research subject at the intersection of sociological research on higher education and analyses of the book market. Academic book has been for many years the number one item on the publishing market as far as the first editions go, nevertheless its significance for the market is deemed minor. At the same time academic monograph, for many years considered, at least in the field of social sciences and humanities, as a “golden standard” of academic work, a criterion for the distribution of academic prestige, experiences the change of its function as an effect of the reforms of the higher education system in Poland aimed rather at valorising articles published in prestigious journals (especially those with IF) and open-access publications, as well as an effect of the ongoing technological change concerning the production and distribution of text. An analysis of these processes that takes into consideration the interests of main actors (researchers, publishers, librarian, booksellers, readers, and also political decision makers and experts responsible for the policies regarding science and higher education), the institutional infrastructure can thus have not only a theoretical value, but can also contribute to the discussion on the role of academic publishers and the significance of academic monograph in the context of future reforms of the higher education system.

Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na książkę naukową jako przedmiot badawczy, istniejący na przecięciu socjologicznego nurtu badań nad szkolnictwem wyższym i badań nad rynkiem książki. Książka naukowa od lat dominuje na polskim rynku książki w zakresie liczby publikowanych pierwszych wydań, jednak jej znaczenie dla rynku wydawniczego uznawane jest za znikome. Równocześnie monografia naukowa, przez lata uważana – przynajmniej w obszarze nauk humanistycznych i społecznych – za „złoty standard” pracy naukowej, będący wyznacznikiem prestiżu i podstawą awansu akademickiego, zmienia swoją funkcję wraz z reformami szkolnictwa wyższego w Polsce, w coraz większym stopniu nastawionymi na docenianie artykułów w najbardziej uznanych czasopismach (najlepiej z impact factor) i publikacji w formule open access, a także w obliczu dokonujących się innowacji technologicznych dotyczących produkcji, opracowania i dystrybucji tekstu. Analiza tych przemian poprzez poznanie głównych interesariuszy (naukowców i wydawców, ale również bibliotekarzy, księgarzy, czytelników, nie zapominając o politycznych decydentach i gremiach eksperckich odpowiedzialnych za politykę w zakresie nauki i szkolnictwa wyższego) i ich zaplecza instytucjonalnego może nie tylko mieć znaczenie teoretyczne, ale także przyczynić się do dyskusji nad rolą wydawców naukowych i znaczeniem samej monografii naukowej w kontekście przyszłych reform szkolnictwa wyższego.

Even though the use of open preprint databases for scholarly publications is commonplace in several disciplines, their possibilities remain largely unexplored in the humanities. This article examines the emergence and the dynamics of academic preprint and evaluates the possibilities for introducing preprint for the humanities.

Pomimo że korzystanie z otwartych baz preprintów publikacji naukowych jest powszechne w wielu dyscyplinach, możliwości takich baz preprintów pozostają w dużej mierze niewykorzystane w naukach humanistycznych. Artykuł omawia powstawanie i dynamikę preprintu akademickiego oraz ocenia możliwości wprowadzenia preprintów w naukach humanistycznych.
