Rivers used to serve important functions in the development of cities, and river valleys are a part of the urban space. Regardless of several centuries of anthropogenic influences large rivers and their valleys have remained the dominant elements of the cityscape. In the case of small rivers and valleys the situation has been different. The expansion of urban infrastructure often led to an elimination of rivers and their valleys from the developed area. In many cases rivers were directed down straightened concrete ditches and sometimes the locations of their channels were changed altogether. In the city centre, rivers were locked in underground channels, i.e. they vanished from the cityscape. Urban floods, so annoying for the inhabitants, usually occur within river sections which have been utilized intensively and covered with impermeable surface. Even though a river was hidden in underground interceptor pipes, a valley dip remains still accumulating rainfall. The aim of this article is to present the extent of transformation of small rivers and valleys within two large cities located on watersheds: Łódź and Lviv, and the contemporary utilization and the possibility of renaturalising them.

In the paper the characteristics of one of the most valuable rivers in Łódź, the Jasień, are described. The Jasień is a unique example of a river once working for industry but now existing as untapped tourism potential despite its negative image and even being partly forgotten. The description of the most valuable historical hydro-technical work along the river’s course is given with some useful historical information. In the summary, a suggestion of how the river bank might become a trigger for studying Łódź’s history, as its industrial development was so strongly related to the river network.

During its entire utilisation history - lasting several hundred years - the area of the Tatra Mountains underwent multidirectional anthropopressure. As the result, all components of their natural environment have been transformed, including relief and water conditions. The analysis of the literature on this topie conducted by the author, as well as his observations performed in the area, confirmed the assumption that transformations caused by human actions developed with varying intensity and admitted various forms depending on the area of action and the magnitude of means applied. The transformation scalę presented here estimates the influence of anthropopressure on the stability of the catchment area systems of larger Tatra streams, partial catchment areas of their confluents and selected slope surfaces. In systems, where the limits of persistence were not exceeded, stability was ensured by natural processes compensating for the conseąuences of anthropopressure. In systems where stability was disturbed, planned preventive measures are necessary.

Artykuł stanowi porównanie odpływu ze zlewni Potoku Strzyża w latach 1933 i 2016. W ciągu ostatnich osiemdziesięciu lat intensywnej urbanizacji naturalne pokrycie zlewni zastąpiły liczne powierzchnie nieprzepuszczalne. Antropopresja ograniczyła retencję powierzchniową, proces infiltracji i przepływ podziemny. Ponadto zmianie uległa naturalna sieć drenażu zlewni. Ryzyko powodzi w Gdańsku wzrosło na skutek zwiększonej objętości odpływu ze zlewni Potoku Strzyża.

The article contains comparison of the runoff from the Strzyża Creek catchment in years 1933 and 2016. In the last eighty years of intensive urbanization the natural cover of the Strzyża Creek basin has been replaced with many impermeable surfaces. Anthropopressure caused reduction of the surface storage, limitation of the infiltration and base flow. Moreover the natural drainage patterns have been completely changed. The flood risk in the Strzyża Creek catchment rose as the greater runoff rates flow into storm water collection systems, reservoirs and surrounding water bodies.

Przedstawiono wyniki analizy zmian powierzchni i liczebności wszystkich jezior Pojezierza Dobrzyńskiego w ciągu ostatnich 110 lat.

This paper presents the results of the analysis of changes in the surface area and number of lakes in the Dobrzyń Lake District over the past 110 years. In the analysis cartographic materials from three periods were used : 1900 – 1915, 1980 – 1985 and 2009, making it possible to capture changes in the surface area of lakes and determine their trend. The results indicate a decrease in the surface area of the studied lakes in the mentioned period of time. The biggest changes occurred in the case of the smallest lakes of surface area less than 5 hectares. It was found out that the decrease in lake surface area in specific parts of the Lake District was uneven. The largest decrease occurred in the southern, north-eastern and particularly south-eastern parts of it. Changes in the surface area of individual lakes ranged from a few to several tens of percent (in the case of lake disappearance it was one hundred percent). The most common consequence of these changes was an increase in the lakeshore length due to the creation of peninsulas and bays. In several cases, the emergence of small islands was also observed. The trend of lake surface area decreasing indicated in the paper is consistent with the results obtained by other authors in other parts of Poland.

W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki geoarcheologicznych badań przeprowadzonych w obrębie oraz otoczeniu dwóch wielokulturowych stanowisk archeologicznych w Tominach i Zawadzie (południowo-wschodnia część Przedgórza Iłżeckiego), w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie północnej krawędzi pokrywy lessowej Wyżyny Sandomierskiej.

The article presents the results of geoarchaeological research carried out within and around two multicultural archaeological sites in Tominy and Zawada (south-eastern Iłża Foothills), in the immediate vicinity of the northern edge of the loess cover of the Sandomierz Upland. The main objective of the research was to comprehensively reconstruct human settlement and economic activity in the study area in the last ca. 5,000 years, along with identifying its conditions, both at the chronologicalcultural and the environmental level. The results allowed a determination of the course and scale of local cultural phenomena and related settlement processes between the late Neolithic and modern times. On the basis of traces of exploitation and transformation of the natural environment, an attempt was made to determine the nature and extent of local anthropopressure in the Neoholocene.

The paper presents the results of tourist traffic monitoring carried out in the years 2007–2009 by SKNG UP in the Pieniny National Park. The study included a survey of 25612 visitor sand allowed estimating the intensity and spatial variability of tourist traffic in the Pieniny National Park, as well as determining the main routes and the most popular marked paths within the Park. The questionnaires helped to determine the types and preferences of the visitors to the Pieniny National Park. During 19 days of monitoring, carried out repeatedly in 2007, 2008 and 2009, surveyors standing at selected measure points counted and surveyed the visitors for 7 hours per day (9 am–4 pm). In July 2007, the intensity of tourist traffic in the PPN reached 1408 persons per day (60 visitors/1km2 of PPN/day), it was 1160 persons per day (49 visitors/1km2 of PPN/day) in July 2008, and 1477 persons/day (63 visitors/1km2 of PPN/day) in July 2009. The most popular routes in the PPN include: the section between Przełęcz Szopka–Trzy Korony with 1200, 948 and 1238 persons per day in the years 2007, 2008 and 2009, respectively; the section Wymiarki–Limierczyki with 1000, 720 and 1071 visitors per day (2007, 2008,2009, respectively), and the section Sokolica–Przełęcz Sosnów: 500, 350, and 700 visitors perday (2007, 2008, 2009, respectively). The most popular place to visit in the Pieniny National Park was Krościenko, receiving twice as many visitors as the largest tourist resort in this region – Szczawnica. Their average age was about 30 years and approximately half of the respondents were people who hold a university degree. The majority of the tourists came from Lesser Poland, Silesia, Masovian and Lodz voivodeships (total number of over 50%). Those who were visiting the Pieniny for the fifth time or more often prevailed among Lesser Poland inhabitants, furthermore they were also the major part of the one-day visitors to these mountains. Krościenko and Szczawnica turned out to be the most popular accommodation places, chosen by 61% of the tourists. Vast majority of the guests reported a three-day minimum stay and most of them gave preference to private accommodation.
