Artykuł jest poświęcony przekształceniom, jakim w czasie ostatnich kilkudziesięciu lat ulegała architektura amerykańskich ambasad. Po zakończeniu II wojny światowej były one budowane jako symbole amerykańskiej demokracji – przeszklone i transparentne „witryny dyplomacji”. Z czasem, pod wpływem zagrożenia terrorystycznego, placówki te uległy ufortyfikowaniu i wzmocnieniu, przez co upodobniły się do bunkrów, „dyplomatycznych fortec”. Nic nie zwiastuje, aby w najbliższej przyszłości trend ten miał się odwrócić. Podejmuje się jedynie kompleksowe działania, aby odpowiednio kształtując formy architektoniczne i zręcznie wykorzystując zasady „niewidzialnego bezpieczeństwa”, uczynić te obiekty nieco bardziej otwartymi, dostępnymi, zmienić ich negatywny wizerunek medialny i ograniczyć ich niekorzystne oddziaływanie na środowisko.

In the article recent transformations in architecture of American embassies are described and discussed. After the World War II American diplomatic posts were typically built as glass-walled and transparent structures, symbols of American openness and democracy, “shop-windows of American diplomacy”. Since then priorities have been dramatically modified. The threat of terrorism forced a fundamental change in the way they are designed and built nowadays. Theirs surroundings became fortified and theirs architecture hardened, therefore they became isolate, bunker-like structures, “fortresses of diplomacy”. There is no sign that this tendency will be reversed in the nearest future, therefore some multidisciplinary efforts are being undertaken to utilize clever architectural solution, as well as a hidden built-in security measures to present those structures as more open, accessible and environmental friendly.
