Artykuł podejmuje problematykę podwójnej negacji, egzemplarycznej dla teologii apofatycznej. Rozpoczyna od kazusów Majmonidesa oraz Mistrza Eckharta, co stanowić będzie pretekst do rozważań, w których analizowana kategoria ukazana zostanie z nieco innego punktu widzenia: umieszczona zostanie w kontekście relacji ontologicznej tego, co skończone, i tego, co nieskończone, a dalej potraktowana zostanie od strony „pozytywnej”. Pomimo tego, że „negacja negacji”, jako element (negatywnej) mistycznej kontemplacji, pozostaje poza racjonalną interpretacją (jak całe doświadczenie mistyczne), kategoria ta możliwa jest do uchwycenia w swoistej metaanalizie, tj. jako kategoria filozoficzno-teologiczna.

The article deals with the category of double negation, representative of the apophatic theology. It begins with mystical theologies of Maimonides and Meister Eckhart. Next, the article presents the category in question from quite a different perspective – it attempts to place it in the context of the ontological relationship between the finite and the infinite and look at it from a “positive” angle. Although, the “negation of negation” as the element of (negative) mystical contemplation remains beyond rational interpretation (as mystical experience in general), this category can, in fact, be “grasped” in type of metaanalysis, i.e. as a philosophical and theological category.

Artykuł przybliża postać bizantyjskiego myśliciela, przedstawiciela renesansu bizantyjskiego, żyjącego w X w., biskupa Aretasa z Cezarei, oraz jego komentarz do Kategorii Arystotelesa. Celem jest ukazanie naukowego warsztatu i badawczej pasji, jaką odznaczał się biskup Aretas w komentowaniu szczególnie wymagającego tekstu, jakim są Arystotelesowskie Kategorie, oraz przedstawienie zasad bizantyńskiej hermeneutyki tekstów filozoficznych, której główną cechą jest krytycyzm oraz unikanie filologicznych i objaśniających komentarzy. Scholia Aretasa do Arystotelesa pokazują, że biskup Cezarei używał tekstu filozofa przede wszystkim do wykładania na jego podstawie neoplatońskiej ontologii.

The Ultimate Paintings, a series of abstractions made by Ad Reinhardt during the 1960s, are coupled with writings with obvious affinities to the apophatic formulas of the commentaries of the Upanishads (the philosophical conclusions of the Vedas) known as the “nondual Vedānta” (Advaita Vedānta). The abstractions themselves refer to the model of the yantra, the geometrical diagram into which Brahmanic iconography is supposed to subside. In this instance, the apophasis defeats the attempt to signify through painting and language what constitutes itself in painting and language.
