The subject of the considerations put forward in this article is an evaluation of the quality, in substantive and ethical terms, of the specialist translation into Polish of Henryk Hiż’s article ‘Peirce’s Influence on Logic in Poland’. The trans-    lation subjected to evaluation here was published in 2015 in the specialist philosophical journal Studia z Filozofii Polskiej  [Studies of Polish Philosophy] (October 2015, pp. 21–33). In the presented evaluation, I point out substantive and ethical violations committed by interpreter, calling attention to (a) the flouting of the principle cuilibet in arte sua ; (b) manipulation of source material; (c) dishonesty in philological-textological development; (d) improper editorial preparation; (e) disregard of the subsequent literature on the subject; (f) deliberate and unjustified abridgement of the original text. The deficiencies enumerated in points (a)–(f) are the result of interpreter’s adoption of the ‘publish or perish’ strategy, the overriding goal of which is to publish an article in a high-impact journal with the aim of achieving the most favourable bibliometric result in the shortest possible time, at a cost to the integrity and ethical responsibility of the translator-researcher.

For many people the expression “applied ethics” sounds like a pleonasm. They tend to claim that ethics by its very nature is about practical matters. It deals with human actions and their motivations and there is no need to create an additional discipline with special practical bias. However, at least since the 1970s, there has been a growing movement of applied ethics which resulted not only in the increase of enrolment to the academic courses but also in the demand for consulting services in this field. And yet the question still remains to what extent applied ethics inherits philosophical tradition and style of thinking. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that the applied ethics is a continuation of philosophical inquiry in the way adjusted well to the demands of the pluralistic and democratic societies.

Mariusz WojewodaInstitute of PhilosophyFaculty of Social SciencesUniversity of Silesia in KatowicePoland Ethics as Social UtopiaAn Analysis in the Perspective of the Philosophy of ValuesAbstract: The article is devoted to the issue of the presence of the utopian motif in ethics, particularly in ethics based on the philosophy of value. The general point of reference here is the work of the German philosopher Nicolai Hartmann. Normative ethics is intrinsically oriented towards the change of human moral behaviours to an important value (good), especially social good. We are never sure that ethical recommendations will be implemented, therefore, in a way, ethics displays utopian character. However, it does not inhibit formulating ethical programs promoting the change of attitude and behaviour. In the article I distinguish the ethical utopism from utopism. I associate the last one with the classical theories of ideologists of the social life and contemporary specialists in managing organizations. The ethical utopism manifests itself in a certain way of understanding ethical codes as something that institutionally forces attitudes and moral behaviour within a company. For an abstract in English, scroll down. In the article I prove the separateness of professional medical ethics in three ways: 1. By showing differences between the normative rank of responsibilities (conducts, values and virtues) within general and professional ethics. 2. By justifying affiliation of professional medical ethics within the appropriation model which is a type of applied ethics characterized by its unique properties. 3. By justifying historical professionalism as the ethics that is proper for the medical profession; for this kind of ethical internalism the content of professional ethics is the sole work of medical professional organizations as well as individual doctors. In the final part of the article I reconstruct the actual and postulated relations between professional ethics and professionalism as well as between academic bioethics and public bioethics. The aim of this reconstruction is to indicate the optimal from the perspective of ethical education place of professional ethics within the ethics education system for professionalists.

In the paper, we discuss the educational potential of coaching as a complementary tool for leadership training. Coaching is treated as a supporting method in the process of learning that must be backed up with some philosophical aspects in virtues that allow building up social leadership competence. Thus, leader virtues, such as loyalty, personal example or duty are discussed as quality issues of the modern leader.
