A performance appraisal system forms an integral part of any developed management concept. The efficiency of such an appraisal system is fostered in institutions which prioritise quality and continuous improvement, and where innovationfriendly actions are joined by those that build confidence. An efficient appraisal system is characterised as follows: it is systemic in character, regular, universal, flexible, concrete, transparent and simple in application. When implementing a modern appraisal system, care should be taken to adhere to ethically sound principles such as fairness, objectivity, goodness and truthfulness.

In this paper, the author presents the results of his inquiry on personal management in 103 companies of Opole region. In the light of the inquiry it appears that personal connections are claimed by 51% of respondents to be important in Staff recruitment, although 88% respondents do not accept this. 96% of the inquired people are convinced that the managing board is obliged to prior inform the staff about the planned redundancy, and 57% expect essential aid from the employer to find a new job. Also, according to employees, the roles of job seniority (62%) and personal connections (44%) are important in rewarding the staff. However, the employee’s role in realizing the company’s longterm targets in rewarding the staff is seen as minor (31%). A positive aspect of personal management is that a considerable number of companies (43%) already apply assessing systems and employees accept them. Yet, we still lack modern staff assessment systems in our companies e. g. 3600.

Celem artykułu jest identyfikacja współczesnego stanowiska badaczy w sprawie wytycznych, które pozwalają na uzyskanie zakładanej efektywności rozmowy oceniającej. Artykuł jest próbą zestawienia wskazań teoretycznych i empirycznych, dotyczących efektywnego prowadzenia rozmowy oceniającej. Przedmiotem studiów była literatura z zakresu systemu ocen okresowych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem rozmowy oceniającej i czynników (ludzkich i organizacyjnych), wpływających na jej efektywność, której miarą jest wzrost motywacji i poprawa wyników osiąganych przez pracowników. W opracowaniu wzięto pod uwagę polskie i zagraniczne opracowania poświęcone tej tematyce.

The goal of this article is the identification of the current position of researchers on guidelines that allow the achieving of the assumed effectiveness of the appraisal interview. The article strives to assemble theoretical and empirical indications relating to the effective conducting of an appraisal interview. The subject of the research was literature on performance appraisal systems, with special stress on appraisal interviews and factors (human and organizational) impacting on effectiveness, measured by growth in motivation and improved worker results. The study takes into account both Polish and foreign work devoted to the subject.
