This article is an analysis of Roman Polanski’ The Pianist, focused on presenting how the city space in this film, both its exteriors and interiors, makes it a story of Warsaw during the Second World War. The gradual destruction of the city is presented in two supplementary fashions. On the one hand, there is as a quasi-documentary reconstruction of the past based on literary (Władysław Szpilman’s diary) and visual (archive photographs and films) material, while on the other, there is a symbolic narration, where particular places and events bear hidden meanings. Next to Chopin and his music, the piano, interiors and city walls, the most meaningful symbol in the film is a monument of Jesus Christ carrying the cross, a statue standing in front of The Church of the Holy Cross in Warsaw, a motif that appears in the second shot of the Pianist and returns three more times during the film.

The paper refers to Anatol Stern’s novel “Namiętny pielgrzym” (“A Passionate Pilgrim”). Owing to the writer’s situation and the political changes that took place after the World War II, it serves as an example of a text that proves challenging to prepare for publication within the framework of traditional paper edition. Based on archive materials, the researcher describes Stern’s situation who for a long time was in political disgrace and later faced censorship problems. An analysis of the author’s copy reveals the development of Stern’s workshop, due to which the text in many places gains finishing touch. Ultimately, the article presents the main assumptions of traditional editions for such texts and depicts the advantage of editions that employ DTD standard and hypertext potential.

Początek rozwoju zasobów archiwalnych polskiej prowincji Zakonu Pijarów pochodzi z okresu międzywojennego, choć ich obecny państwo ogólnie odzwierciedla długoterminowe wysiłki archiwistów po II wojnie światowej. W zbiorach znajdują się przedmioty archiwalne powstałe w XVII wieku aż do czasów współczesnych. Do najcenniejszych materiałów archiwalnych należy bezsprzecznie Matricula Provinciae Poloniae Scholarum Piarum, obejmujący lata 1742–1867. To jest źródło najczęściej wykorzystywane w badaniach akademickich. Warto jednak to podkreślić w zasobach archiwalnych możemy również znaleźć wiele innych cennych materiałów archiwalnych, takich jak kronikę, akta kapituły, podręczniki szkolne i inwentarz.

The beginning of the development of the archival holdings of the Polish Province of the Order of Piarists dates back to the period between the wars, although their current state generally reflects the long-term efforts of archivists following World War II. The holdings include archival items created in the period from the seventeenth century to the present. Among the most valuable archive materials is, unarguably, Matricula Provinciae Poloniae Scholarum Piarum, covering the period 1742-1867. It is the source most often used for academic research. It is worth emphasising, however, that in the archival holdings we can also find many other valuable archival materials such as chronicle-like books, files of the Chapter, school books, and inventories.
