Sorbian studies in Japan: trends and perspectives Summary How does it come that Japanese scholars get interested in Sorbian studies? In this paper we review how Sorbian studies emerged and evolved in Japan, centering on the humanities – especially on linguistics and literature studies. Of course, motivations to work on Sorbian studies vary from scholar to scholar. But characteristic of the situation in Japan is that along with interested Slavists, not a few Japanese researchers on Sorbian studies have begun their study with a German studies background. This fact suggests that a joint approach from the German and Slavistic viewpoints may enrich Sorbian studies in Japan. At the end of this paper, the actual list of works on Sorbian themes by Japanese researchers written in languages other than Japanese is added as an appendix.

This text is the first part of the report on the mandate activities of Dr. Andrzej Talarczyk, the coordinator at the Institute of German Philology at the University of Szczecin in the field of cooperation with academic and non-academic institutions in Germany. It covers the entire period of the existence of this organisational unit, i.e. the years 1985–2019 and the first academic year of the work of the newly established Institute of Literature and New Media. The description of this part concerns the following institutions: (1) German Embassy in Warsaw, (2) University of Rostock, (3) Sankelmark Academy in Oeversee, (4) Christian Albrechts University in Kiel, (5) University of Leipzig, (6) University of Greifswald, (7) Ostsee Academy in Lübeck-Travemünde, (8) European Academy Mecklenburg/Vorpommern in Waren, (9) Konrad Adenauer Foundation, branch in Rostock, (10) Grips-Theatre in Berlin, (11) Theatre Uckermärkische Bühnen in Schwedt, (12) Ehm Welk and Local History Museum in Angermünde, (13) Uckermärkische Literaturgesellschaft in Angermünde, (14) Academia Baltica in Oeversee, (15) Visitor Service of the German Bundestag in Bonn and Berlin (16), Euroregion in Szczecin. Study trips to northern Germany in the footsteps of German writers are also described. All these activities are presented in a wider context of the Institute’s development which forms a background to these descriptions and analyses. With their systemic nature, they extended the regionalist spectrum of impact not only to the whole Alma Mater Stetinensis, Euroregion Pomerania, but also to the other partners beyond the Oder – from Mecklenburg/Western Pomerania and Schleswig-Holstein. These projects were innovative not only in terms of cross-border contacts, but also in terms of German studies in Poland as a whole.

The gradual shift of the world’s economic and political centre to Asia, as well as the dynamic development of China over the past decades, is of general interest to government officials, business circles, and academia. The research in the field of Chinese studies is accompanied by the development of teaching offer from educational institutions. Studies on China and Chinese language complete the curriculum of educational programs at various levels, from school through university degrees at BA and MA levels to postgraduate. The main aim of the paper is to diagnose the phenomenon related to the growing interest in China studies. The study was conducted in the form of an anonymous questionnaire addressed to students at the Institute of the Middle and Far East of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków between 2019 and 2020, i.e. prior to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The research answers the question to what extent study programs meet the needs of educating about China reported by students – clients, offering access to comprehensive and academic-verified knowledge of China and the opportunity to learn Chinese.

The article explores the heuristic potential of gender studies and area studies (especially those concerned with Central and Eastern Europe) and appeals for a decentring of research units such as ‘general history’ and ‘Europe’ within historiography. It criticises the often mechanical use of spatial categories that ignores the fabrication of spaces by area specialists, and the reification of gender identities within women’s and gender studies. It argues for a combination of gender and area sensitive research in order to evade the juxtaposition of constructivism vs. essentialism. History of knowledge and feminist theory of science are described as useful tools for such an approach.

This article provides an introduction to the Research Network “New Geographies of Scandinavian Studies” while at the same time discussing some of its main concerns and questions: the position of the Nordic countries and the role of Scandinavian Studies in the changing geopolitical landscape of post-Cold War Europe. The collapse of the Eastern bloc in 1989–1991 led to a reconfiguration of the European political map. This situation also entailed new possibilities for international and cross-disciplinary research: A new understanding of Nordic and Baltic studies was institutionalized and new regional concepts were developed as alternatives to Cold War geopolitics. The network “New Geographies of Scandinavian Studies” is rooted in this ongoing reorientation of the field. The article discusses some of the potentials and challenges of this new agenda of Scandinavian Studies in the context of the new geopolitical confrontation between Russia and the West after Russia’s military attack on Ukraine in February 2022.

Badaczy interesuje przede wszystkim historia kraju, politologia, antropologia i literaturoznawstwo. Powstawanie międzynarodowej społeczności badaczy pozwala Autorce artykułu sformułować wniosek, że dyscyplina, która miała wcześniej wyraźnie wschodni charakter, dziś zyskuje zasięg globalny.

The paper deals with the new developments in the field of Russian and East European studies (REES) after the end of the Cold war, with the focus on the U.S. and Great Britain. Along with organizational and structural changes in the field special attention is devoted to new subjects and trends in the study of the region, with Belarus as a case study. Research in this field began in the 90s and has been booming since the 2000s. Researchers are primarily interested in the history of the country, political science, anthropology, and literary studies. The formation of an international community of researchers allows us to conclude that previously “Western” discipline of REES is gaining a global character.
