W odpowiedzi dowodzi się, po pierwsze, że argument probabilistyczny jest chybiony, o ile nie jest uzupełniony dodatkowymi przesłankami materialnymi. Po drugie, pokazuje się, że argumenty z laboratorium, organów szczątkowych i postulatu naśladowania przyrody w technice można odwrócić przeciw teorii inteligentnego projektu. Po trzecie, omówiona jest kwestia odróżniania artefaktów od obiektów naturalnych w kontekście wymogu wyjaśniania. Wreszcie, twierdzi się, że zaniedbanie ze strony zwolenników teorii inteligentnego projektu dyskusji na temat warunków, jakie musi spełnić autentyczne, a nie pozorne wyjaśnienie ściąga tę teorię bliżej fideizmu niż nauki.

In the reply it is argued, first, that the argument from low probability does not work in the absence of additional assumptions. Second, arguments from laboratory, vestigial structures, and imitating nature in technology are reversed against ID. Third, the question of telling artefacts from natural objects is discussed in the context of the search for explanation. Finally, the neglect of the requirements for an explanation to be non-vacuous on the part of ID theorists is said to drive ID towards fideism rather than science.

Artykuł powstrzymuje się od polemiki merytorycznej z teorią inteligentnego projektu, dalej TIP, a jedynie wskazuje na jej niedostatki metodologiczne. Dowodzi, że wbrew twierdzeniom jej zwolenników TIP nie jest falsyfikowalna. W odróżnieniu od teorii ewolucji nie może pełnić nawet roli metafizycznego programu badawczego w sensie Poppera. Co jednak ważniejsze, TIP nie pełni żadnych funkcji eksplanacyjnych. W grę wchodzą jedynie wyjaśnienia intencjonalne, TIP zaś nie jest w stanie zidentyfikować motywów domniemanego projektanta. Argument jest zilustrowany przykładami zaczerpniętymi od Stanisława Lema, które pokazują, że możliwych jest wiele alternatywnych hipotez na temat celów domniemanego projektu i nie ma żadnych wskazówek na temat wyboru między nimi. Ponadto artykuł podważa argument probabilistyczny na korzyść TIP oraz argument z nieredukowalnej złożoności, wskazując, za S. Lemem, że artefakty charakteryzują się względną prostotą w porównaniu z obiektami naturalnymi.

Instead of arguing against the content of ID, the paper points at its methodological deficiencies. In the first place, it is argued, against its followers, that ID is not falsifiable. Contrary to Evolution, ID cannot even play a role of a metaphysical research program in the Popperian sense of the word. More importantly, ID is devoid of any explanatory power. The only kind of explanation for ID to offer is an intentional explanation. This, however, ID is not able to do, for it cannot identify any intentions on the part of the putative Designer. The argument is illustrated by examples from Stanislav Lem’s prose, that present a handful of alternative hypotheses about the Designer’s ends without any hint concerning the choice between them. In addition, the paper puts into doubt the probabilistic argument in favor of ID as well as the argument from irreducible complexity, pointing at the relative simplicity of artefact in comparison to natural objects.
