The article presents the problem of altering authenticity of Zakopane and the surrounding areas which is an effect of transformations in tourism. These transformations result from changes in expectations and perceptions of contemporary visitors. From the late nineteenth century Zakopane enjoyed a great popularity among all kinds of travelers and the curious. They came here for many reasons which changed in time. The very nature of the village and the requirements of tourists also changed. The introduction to the article characterizes the selected aspects of the town’s culture in connection with its tourist attraction and value. The main part describes the tourist industry in Zakopane nowadays in the context of its early development. It also analyses the attitude to this problem by locals and tourists themselves. The issue of spectacularization, a show for tourists, which can be treated as an example of cultural authenticity disappearance, was also discussed.
