Discourse, understood as a category of the cognitive character, was applied in this article to analyse the diaries of two Polish composers and feature writers – Stefan Kisielewski and Zygmunt Mycielski, written in the communist Poland. The purpose of the analysis was to show how this special cultural, social and political context was reflected in their works and how it affected their choices as far as the style and topics were concerned. This paper was also supposed to single out various types of discourses and discursive strategies in the authors’ diaries. A particular attention was paid to the selfawareness of the writers and methods of its expression, either in a direct or oblique way, which often requires an active, almost “archaeological” reading that involves revealing new reserves of meanings from under another layer of words. The performed analysis leads to the conclusion that various types of discourses (anti-totalitarian, chronicle, critical and musical, political, intimate) are present in the discussed works. The above conclusion invites one to ask the following question (which sets a further direction in the research): To what extent is it an individual feature of the authors’ works and to what extent is it a certain element of the style of this period?

The article analyses the extended interview Dialogue Heals all Wounds carried out by Marek Tomalik, the head of the foreign department of the Catholic Information Agency, with Sviatoslav Shevchuk, Major Archbishop of Kiev, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, published in 2018 by the Znak Publishing House. The focus is on the genre features that allow to categorise this text as autobiographical literature. When analysing the memories of the main character, special attention is devoted to the construction of his personal, group, and national identity in the text.

The paper is an attempt to present the ambivalent attitude of Jurek Becker, an East-German writer born in Lodz before World War II, towards his own life and ambiguous Jewish identity. The author examines two novels by Becker: “Jacob the Liar” and “The Boxer” which in the fictional literature space present the reality of Holocaust, which is an experience familiar to Jurek Becker. The focal aspect here is the correlation between the highly traumatic personal experiences of the writer in question and their literary transposition in the afore mentioned novels. What is characteristic for the writer is the unstraightforward nature of this correlation, in which the world created in the literary work is not a direct faithful depiction of the experienced world. In both novels Jurek Becker – similarly to his non-literary statements – avoids making any conclusive statements, also regarding his own Jewish identity, thus making his writing activity similar to playing a game with himself and the reader. To what extent this game is an element of a conscious strategy and to what extent it is merely a pose adopted by the writer remains an open question.

The German–Polish conflict about Upper Silesia from 1918–1922, which is one of the most important historical and political issues in the literary work of Ernst von Salomon, particularly in his autobiographical novels, is briefly analysed in the context of his turbulent biography, his work and autobiographical strategies. In von Salomon’s novels, the sheer conflict seen as a fight over new frontiers in Central and Eastern Europe in 1918–1922 becomes a subjective narration which results, to a large extent, from his involvement in the postulates of the German national revolution as one of the trends of the Conservative Revolution in Germany between 1918 and 1933. At the end of the paper, this conflict in Salomon’s literary perspective is briefly analysed around key issues based on selected examples from his autobiographical novels.

Niniejszy artykuł podejmuje próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, jak wyglądała praca redakcyjna Anny Kamieńskiej nad Notatnikiem. Spostrzeżenia na temat procesu twórczego czynione są na podstawie fragmentu rękopiśmiennego dziennika z okresu 31 X 1971–15 II 1972 oraz publikowanych w latach 70. odcinków dzieła na łamach czasopisma „W drodze” i wydanych w latach 80. książek. Analiza zmian redakcyjnych skupia się tu na wybranych formach językowych. Wśród nich możemy wyróżnić np. zamianę rzeczowników w zaimki, zdrobnień w formę neutralną lub skrót, pytania w twierdzenie, eliminację partykuł i osoby „ja” w czasownikach i zaimkach. Wszystkie wymienione zabiegi prowadzą do skrócenia zapisów, nadania im aforystycznego charakteru.

This article is an attempt at answering the question about Anna Kamieńska editorial work on Notatnik. The discussion of the creative process applies to a manuscript fragment of the journal from the period 31 Oct 1971–15 Feb 1972, the work published in instalments in the 1970s in the W drodze periodical, and the book releases published in the 1980s. The analysis of editorial changes applies to selected linguistic forms. Those include, e.g., replacement of nouns with pronouns, diminutives with neutral forms or acronyms, questions with ascertainment, and the elimination of particles and first-person singular in verbs and pronouns. All of the listed interventions led to a shortening of passages and assigning them the nature of aphorisms.
