Blessed Michael Sopocko: A Closer Look at the Mystery of Divine Mercy

Divine Mercy is that which ensures human happiness. In the 20th century, Bl. Fr. Michael Sopocko was a special apostle of Divine Mercy who proclaimed its message to the world. This article presents the person and activities of Fr. Michael Sopocko by focusing on: 1) the source and the validity of worshiping Divine Mercy; 2) Fr. Sopocko’s biblical and theological explanations of Divine Mercy; and 3) the image of the Merciful Jesus as the “manifestation” of Divine Mercy.

Gwarantem ludzkiej szczęśliwości jest Boże Miłosierdzie. W ostatnim stuleciu szczególnym Apostołem Bożego Miłosierdzia i osobą zaangażowaną w Jego przybliżenie światu był bł. ks. Michał Sopoćko. Ukazując jego postać i aktywność w tym względzie w niniejszych analizach skupiono się na następujących zagadnieniach: 1. Geneza i aktualność kultu Bożego Miłosierdzia; 2. Biblijno-teologiczne uzasadnienie kultu Bożego Miłosierdzia w ujęciu ks. Michała Sopoćki; 3. Obraz Najmiłosierniejszego Zbawiciela jako „objawienie” Bożego Miłosierdzia.

Devine Mercy in the sacraments is the realisation of the invisible grace that works through them. According to MichaÅł Sopoćko’s beatitudes, sacraments are “inspirited” by God’s mercy, which is “able to forgive even the gravest of sins”. Sacraments remain the most effective form of giving grace of mercy because their action is not dependent on the faith of the recipient. They are clear signs of Christ’s concern for his Church.

Apostolska Grupa Miłosierdzia Bożego popularyzuje kult Chrystusa – Króla Miłosierdzia. Tytuł „Król Miłosierdzia” występuje w Dzienniczku św. Siostry Faustyny Kowalskiej (Dz. 83; 1146; por. 378). Artykuł poświęcony jest poszukiwaniu odpowiedzi na pytanie o stosunek kultu miłosierdzia Bożego do kultu Króla Miłosierdzia. Odpowiedź streszcza się w zdaniu: kult miłosierdzia Bożego jest trynitarny, kult Króla Miłosierdzia jest chrystologiczny i podkreśla godność królewską Chrystusa, a tym samym także Jego człowieczeństwo.

The Apostolic Group of Divine Mercy promotes the worship of Christ the King of Mercy. The Christological title “King of Mercy” occurs in the Diary of St. sister Faustina Kowalska (no. 83; 1146; cf. 378). The article is devoted to answering the question regarding relationship between the Divine Mercy devotion and the worship of the King of Mercy. The answer is summed up in this sentence: the devotion to the Divine Mercy is a Trinitarian one and that to King of Mercy is a Christological one and emphasizes the kingship of Christ, and thus also His humanity.

Objawienia s. Faustyny Kowalskiej przyczyniły się do rozpo-wszechnienia kult Miłosierdzia Bożego dzięki jego promotorom bł. ks. Michała So-poćki oraz zgromadzeniom zakonnym pallotynów i marianów oraz sióstr Matki Bożej Miłosierdzia. Mimo wydanej przez Święte Oficjum Notyfikacji, zakazującej szerzenie kultu w formie podanej przez s. Faustynę w Dzienniczku, promotorzy kultu nie usta-wali w wysiłkach przybliżania istoty przymiotu Boga, ale i samej s. Faustyny czyniąc zabiegi o jej beatyfikację. Pallotyni na prośbę s. Ksawery Olszamowskiej ZMBM podjęli się procedury procesu beatyfikacyjnego, co w ostateczności okazało się zabie-giem pozbawionym mocy prawnej. Ich wysiłki zostały uwieńczone 29.stronicowym dokumentem tzw. articulo, który mógł stać się przyczynkiem i bazą źródłową we właściwym już procesie informacyjnym i beatyfikacyjnym zainicjowanym przez kard. Karola Wojtyłę.

Revelations of Sr. Faustyna Kowalska contributed to the spread of cult of Divine Mercy thanks to Bl. Fr. Michał Sopoćko and the Congregations of Pallotti-nes and Marian Fathers as well as to the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. Despite the Notification issued by the Holy Office which forbade to spread the cult in the form proposed by Sr. Faustyna in her Diary [Dzienniczek], the propagators of the cult did not cease in their efforts to promote the essence of God’s attributes as well as Sister Faustyna herself by striving for her beatification. At the request of Sr. Ksawera Ol-szamowska CSBMM, the Pallotines undertook the beatification process, which ulti-mately turned out to be an act without legal force. Their efforts were crowned with a 29-page document, the so called articulo, which became a contribution and a source base in the actual information and beatification process initiated by Cardinal Karol Wojtyła.
